We are pleased to share some important adjustments to our April 15-16 State Conference provisional program in response to recent consultations with the Victorian Government regarding the new Victorian Recycling Infrastructure Plan (VRIP). Ongoing consultation on the VRIP will remain open for approximately 30 days and we've therefore included updates from the government into our conference program covering the VRIP and risk and contingency planning. The VRIP holds particular importance for members who own or manage facilities in Victoria, intend to expand or alter the use of their current facilities, or are planning to establish or acquire new sites. It's crucial businesses owning or managing such facilities keep informed about these key agenda items for 2024, as they will undoubtedly impact operations for years to come. One of the Sprints we're running, sponsored by WRc Group, is looking at: Recycle to Replenish: Keeping Water in the Main, Not Down the Drain! How can we re-use the water from water mains flushing by returning it to the water network? NWL carries out flushing in our DMAs to help remove excess deposits from our water network and so improve the customer experience. In the last few years our teams have flushed around 4000km of distribution main per annum to maintain water quality. During the summer months and periods of high demand we are do not flush our water mains so we are looking for solutions that can help us re-use the water used for flushing back into the network. The UK is at risk of severe water shortages with the Environment Agency highlighting that “if no action is taken between 2025 and 2050 around 4 billion extra litres of water per day will be needed for public water supply”. We are looking for people form network operations, water quality, vehicle design & leasing, environmental waste management companies and engineers to help us come up with a solution. Fantastic interview with Anton Drazevic on RNZ with Jesse Mulligan today. It's no secret that the construction industry significantly contributes to greenhouse gasses and waste, but it doesn't mean that those in the industry are comfortable with the status quo. What really stood out is the buy-in from local Nelson builders to educate themselves around this waste minimisation scheme. Increasing water supply and reliability in the Lockyer Valley region is set to deliver significant benefits, including higher production, more local jobs, and new investment opportunities. At Sofina, social responsibility is embedded in every part of our business and as we continue to grow and expand, we want to ensure that we continue to conduct our business in an environmentally responsible manner.     In our recent 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, we shared our commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations and the proactive approach we are taking to preserve the environments in which we operate.     We are proud to share a recent investment that we have made to improve our wastewater treatment system in our Mississauga Plant, which will help to improve the quality of our wastewater, prior to returning it to the municipal system, and reduce our water footprint.      We recognize that freshwater is a finite resource, and we are committed to taking the steps required to reduce our water footprint with the above investment and through working directly with municipalities including City of Toronto and Region of Peel , to implement water conservation measures at our facilities; including piloting low flow meters to monitor our water consumption in real-time and quickly address any excess water use.    We would like to say a big thank you to our Environmental and Engineering teams who have worked hard to renovate and replace our wastewater pre-treatment system. This initiative aims to enhance the island’s water supply resilience and reducing dependence on mainland sources. 🔑 𝑲𝒆𝒚 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒆: 🔹 To protect the River Test, a new Isle of Wight recycling plant will provide a sustainable water source to meet rising demand and adapt to climate change. 🔹 The facility will add 8 million litres of recycled water daily to the River Yar, supporting stable Isle of Wight water supplies during droughts. 🔹 The recycling process uses specialized membranes to remove impurities through filtration and reverse osmosis, then reintroduces essential minerals, making the water safe for drinking. 🔹 Southern Water plans to establish four recycling plants, including one in Havant, which will also contribute to safeguarding the River Test. 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬… Southern Water has initiated surveys and investigations at the proposed construction site and pipeline route. A public consultation is scheduled for winter or early next year, offering the community a chance to learn more and provide input on the project. Following the consultation, a planning application will be submitted to the Isle of Wight Council. 💧 Securing WA’s water future! In recognition of National Water Week in Australia, we’re looking back at an innovative and critical piece of Western Australia’s water infrastructure: Water Corporation’s Beenyup Advanced Water Recycling Plant. In 2018, Clough, in joint venture with SUEZ, delivered the Stage 2 expansion of the water recycling plant in Craigie. This multi-award-winning project was meticulously designed to ensure operational flexibility and scalability in response to shifting environmental conditions. The expansion formed a vital component of the Water Corporation’s Groundwater Replenishment Scheme which aimed to reduce reliance on rainfall and ensure access to sustainable water services for every West Australian. The project’s scope involved doubling of the plant’s capacity to recharge up to 28 billion litres of recycled water annually, a quantity sufficient to meet the water needs of up to 100,000 households in Perth.
