Today at Capital High School, we began the teen Mental Health First Aid sessions that equip students with the tools they need to respond to the warning signs of suicide and other crises. These sessions empower teens to: ✅ Recognize warning signs. ✅ Respond effectively. ✅ Involve trusted adults for support. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens in the U.S., underscoring the urgent need for awareness and action. By equipping young people with these life-saving skills, we’re fostering a culture where seeking help is encouraged and normalized. By the end of this week: ✨ 175 more students will have gained this vital knowledge. ✨ 1/3 of Capital High School’s staff will be trained as Youth Mental Health First Aiders, prepared to provide support when it’s needed most. With trainings like these, and with the support of families, schools, and communities, mental health can become a priority, ensuring every young person receives the support they need exactly when they need it. #MentalHealthAwareness #YouthEmpowerment #TeenMentalHealthFirstAid #EducationMatters #TeenMentalHealthFirstAid #MentalHealthEducation

Today's Topic: Check In on Children's Mental Health as They Head Back to School As the holidays wind down and students prepare to return to school, the stress of academic expectations and upcoming end-of-year testing can weigh heavily on their mental health. It’s crucial to remember that while kids are resilient, they also need support and care during these demanding times. Take a moment to ask: - How is your child feeling emotionally as school restarts? - Are they showing signs of stress, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed? - Do they have the tools to navigate these challenges effectively? Supporting our youth goes beyond checking grades—it’s about fostering their mental well-being too. That’s why we encourage parents, teachers, and community members to consider taking Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This course equips you with the skills to recognize signs of mental health challenges and provides practical tools to support young people in need. By learning how to recognize, respond, and provide initial help, you can make a lasting difference in the lives of children around you. Let’s work together to ensure every child feels seen, heard, and supported. For more information or to schedule a Youth Mental Health First Aid training, contact me today! Together, we can build a stronger, healthier community. #YouthMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #BackToSchool #SupportOurYouth #YMHFA #EndOfYearTesting #CommunityCare #BeTheDifference

Today, Centre for Mental Health and Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) have published a new report exploring who is missing from school and the links between school attendance and mental health. We - our staff, youth ambassadors and parent/carer lived experience partners - welcome the report, entitled 'Not in school: The mental health barriers to school attendance'. It outlines the barriers to school attendance including rising mental health problems, access to timely support, racism, discrimination, bullying and poverty. These need to be addressed and there are clear recommendations to do so. At Charlie Waller Trust, we can help education providers with our whole education approach to mental health and wellbeing, and families with a child or young person who is struggling with school attendance via our Parent/Carer Peer Support Programme. Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack—we’d start CPR, or at the very least, call 9-1-1. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone having a panic attack or if we were concerned that a friend or co-worker might be showing signs of alcoholism. Become a Mental Health First Aider with our evidence-based certification course to take the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems and gain the skills you need to reach out, provide initial support, and help connect individuals to the appropriate care.
