A popular program that helps low-income Queenslanders living in cyclone-prone coastal communities make older homes stronger and safer has now opened for a fresh phase of funding. The program offers increased grants to assist with cost-of-living pressures. To date, the program has provided financial assistance to more than 4400 vulnerable Queensland households. Homeowners who have had resilience works approved since the initiative began in 2018 and who have negotiated with their insurers have reported average premium savings of 9%. The fourth phase of the Household Resilience Program is funded through a $20 million commitment from the Australian Government’s flagship Disaster Ready Fund and builds on over $50 million of Queensland Government investment to date. What do Program Delivery Managers (PDMGs) do? Here’s a video explaining it!
Meet Zachary Merino, a Program Delivery Manager in our Recovery Division's Public Assistance Program. Since joining FEMA in 2019, he feels fortunate to have the opportunity to help communities rebuild after a disaster. “I would like people to know that there are other aspects of FEMA beyond just the immediate response, and that we work a lot on the back end. It’s mostly paperwork, but it’s still very important. We obligate a lot of funds to our state partners and help them rebuild after a disaster.” Thank you for following along this month as we shared about FEMA's Public Assistance Program in Region 10. Feel free to review our previous posts to learn more about FEMA’s largest grant program.

Salmon recovery partners throughout the state—including Tribes, local governments, and nonprofits—have seen their projects delayed or cancelled due to impacts from a change in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) no-rise policy. The no-rise policy now mandates costly analyses for salmon habitat restoration projects. Partners are seeking to work with FEMA to change the policy so that it’s more flexible for restoration activities. Read more in the new issue of Making Waves: https://lnkd.in/g8x8sCCV

Build Change is pleased to be a signatory on an open letter advanced by our partners at the National Low Income Housing Coalition calling for strengthened disaster and housing resources in the U.S. We strongly support permanently authorizing the CDBG-DR program, which provides much-needed help to bridge gaps for post-disaster assistance for American families to have access to permanent #resilienthousing. You can help too by asking Congress to enact the Reforming Disaster Recovery Act to protect and strengthen the regulatory framework that makes programs like these possible: https://ow.ly/RteO50SP28F
