A pontoon the size of a football pitch has arrived at Rødbyhavn harbour in Lolland, Denmark for the next stage in sinking the largest tunnel of its kind in the world. Built at the Polish shipyard of Crist, Gdynia in Polen, the immersion pontoon is actually two vessels that can be used individually or as one piece. Ivy 1 and Ivy 2 will support the 217m-long elements of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel from the harbour to their point of immersion between Denmark and Germany, where they will form an 18km subsea tunnel connecting the two countries. “”The Immersion Pontoon has two main functions: to support the elements and to control the immersion process. The vessel contains winches with over 200 km of steel wire and a control room from where the immersion process will be managed,” said Baris Nacar, Construction Marine Manager for Femern, the contractors building the tunnel. “Ivy 1 and Ivy 2 will support opposite ends of each standard element. However, the special elements, which are significantly shorter, will be supported by the two vessels coupled together. “It will require a steady hand and some highly advanced equipment to immerse the tunnel elements with the precision we require. Our Immersion Pontoon, therefore, has been specially built for this purpose.” In total, 79 tunnel elements, each 217m x 42m, and nine metres high, are being produced from nine castings or segments, each 24m long. Another 10 elements will be cast in different sizes. Once sunk, the elements will be fitted together with millimetre precision, the water pumped out and a partial vacuum lock them together. A layer of protective stone will cover them, in turn being layered naturally with gravel and sand. The tunnel will start and finish in Lolland in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany. As well as containing by road, a railway track will accommodate a 200km/h train that will connect Hamburg with Copenhagen in less than three hours. The tunnel is due to be completed in 2029. The 59.5m Feadship, Project 713, has recently been launched from Koninklijke de Vries Scheepsbouw te Aalsmeer and is notably the first Feadship to be equipped with solar cells. Built at Casco- en Sectiebouw in Rotterdam, with exterior design by De Voogt Naval Architects, Project 713 also features FSC-certified plantation teak decking, highlighting its sustainable approach. Her features include: 🟡Custom-made solar cells contributing up to 24 MWh annually 🟢Can run on non-fossil HVO fuel with a diesel-electric system 🟡Hull design optimised for cruising speed, not top speed 🟢YETI Assessment, rated below average ecological impact 🟡Contemporary interior by @Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design Feadship's commitment to innovation in yacht design is encouraging and the project marks a step towards reaching climate-neutral goals by 2030. Once upon a time in Lubin, Poland, an engineer - Wojciech Zimny - embarked on a journey to fulfil his lifelong dream of building motorized wooden boats. Thus, the Heron Boat brand was born. 🚤✨   This endeavor began with the "Heron One," a project that took two years and taught the team the art of boat building. This first model was a labor of love, focusing on mastering wood, resin, veneer, and special paints. 🛠️   A year later, the story continued with a sportier, lighter, and more powerful second model. This evolution showcased the team's growing expertise and innovation. 💡 🔧   Wojciech wasn't alone in this adventure. His son-in-law, Szymon Ziętarski from IAV Poland, played a crucial role in the woodwork and electrical installations. Dutch shipyard Feadship has launched what it claims is the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht. Named Project 821, 118.80-meter long superyacht left their Amsterdam shipyard on May 4. Designing and developing Project 821 took five years and is part of Feadship's research into fossil-free fuels for boats. The ship uses hydrogen fuel cells, which generate power through a chemical reaction instead of combustion. While this technology is common in cars, it's a first for superyachts. The owner's deck, inspired by a luxury apartment, features two bedrooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, two offices, and a living room. The lower deck includes bookshelves around a striking staircase and niches for activities like board games or enjoying coffee. It also houses a library, stateroom, and sea terrace dining room. The interiors use a natural, light color palette with organic materials like leather, marble, and rattan. Project 821 can hold four tons of hydrogen and 16 fuel cells, but this isn't enough for long journeys. When green energy falls short, For longer trips, the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives are powered by MTU generators using HVO, a second-generation bio-fuel that cuts harmful emissions by 90 percent. How to Build the World’s Largest Cruise Ship (or One of Them, Anyway) In a Finnish shipyard, the 250,800-ton sister of Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, is in the final stages of construction. We got an inside look. The valves were opened and more than a thousand workers gathered at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland to watch the “float out” of Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas. The nine-hour process — which involves flooding a special dock with more than 92 million gallons of water to push the 250,800-ton mega-ship onto a pier for the final stages of construction — had begun. Like its sister ship, Icon of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship — the Star measures 1,196 feet long and towers 20 decks high. Capable of carrying nearly 8,000-passengers, the behemoth is scheduled to launch on Aug. 31, 2025, from Port Canaveral, Fla., and will have many of Icon of the Seas’ features: eight “neighborhoods,” six water slides, seven swimming pools and more than 40 dining, drinking and entertainment venues. In response to demand, the company has started construction on the third Icon Class ship, which will be completed in 2026, and plans to order a fourth for 2027, with options for a fifth and a sixth. https://lnkd.in/graJsDYd
