What was the economic impact of Italy hosting The Ryder Cup in 2023? The answer is €262 million making it the most successful Ryder Cup played outside the US. The move away from the UK as the default venue for Ryder Cups in Europe has proven to be a successful gamble. Following France's hosting of the 2018 edition at Golf National, the Marco Simone Country Club hosted the biggest Ryder Cup to date, and the figures indicate just how economically successful the event was. The economic research was carried out by the Sports Industry Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University. Did you know that? 👇 A Mexican by name of Enrique Corcuera is believed to be the founder of padel - by accident 😁 How did he came up with the idea? Well, Corcuera built a court to play tennis at his home in Acapulco in the late 1960s. Not long after, he found that if tennis balls were overhit, which was the case most of the time, they would go all over the place and into neighbouring houses. To prevent this from happening, Corcuera figured, why not surround the court with fences on all sides 💡 However, with these adjustments in place, he still faced some problems as normal tennis rackets generated too much power for the small court 💥 Corcuera and his friends eventually exchanged their tennis rackets for a wooden beach paddle bat. Later, a rulebook evolved, which allowed the players to play off walls, and the rest is history! Fast forward to 2024 where padel has become one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. More and more people are finding their way to padel courts because of the intrinsic dynamic and social nature of the sport. What’s the Biggest Challenge Padel Faces in Becoming a Mainstream Sport ❓ As we all know, Padel is the world’s fastest growing sport and there are no signs of the growth slowing down 📈 To ensure this growth continues, it’s important to tackle any challenges that may arise and not turn a blind eye to them 👀 So What May Stand in Padel’s Way… ❄️ UK Climate (outdoor courts only) - As winter fast approaches, the days are getting shorter, wetter and colder here in Britain. These conditions aren’t favourable among Padel players and it can really affect the player’s experience. How can these outdoor clubs minimise the impact that the weather may have? 📄 Regulations - There is no doubt that procedures and regulations are holding back how quickly courts can be installed here in the UK. For me, if existing clubs can allow case studies to be made of them, it will help other projects get the green light, purely as it will familiarise the local councils who make the decisions. 📺 Mainstream Exposure - Over the last 12 months, it has been great to see the rise of widespread Padel awareness, but it’s still not at the level it should be. I would love to see a Premier Padel tournament here in the UK and it seems the obvious next step for mainstream exposure. 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙨: 𝙄𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙮 𝙫𝙨 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 I compared the growth of padel courts from 2018 to the present of France and Italy. - In 2018 there were more courts in France 641 vs 600 - 2019 and 2020 growth in Italy was significant and the number of courts tripled, France grew less but steadily (25% per year on average) - 2021 and 2022 Padel boom in Italy (5,300 new courts in two years, +400%), France growing steadily (23% approx. per year) - 2023 Growth in Italy starts to slow down but still three times the volume of France, which set an annual record (+40% vs 2022) - 2024 In the first 9 months of the year the consolidation phase begins in Italy, France grows as the number of fields on average as 2023  - 2025 My forecast based on the trend is that France will grow more fields than Italy, but by how much? Rafa 'Raging Bull' Nadal smashes winners off the court. 🎾 The Spanish legend has quietly built a sprawling business empire that rivals his collection of Grand Slam trophies. It starts with his personal 'RN' logo, emblazoned on a growing range of sportswear. From gym bags to sweatbands, it's all aimed at tennis lovers who want to emulate their idol. But Nadal's ambitions go beyond merchandising. In 2016, he launched the Rafa Nadal Academy in his native Mallorca. With his uncle Toni Nadal as its director, it's become a tennis hotbed, churning out the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud. But hotels, not forehands, could be Nadal's next big thing. He's teamed up with Meliá Hotels International to create the Zel Hotels brand. These luxury properties in Mexico and Mallorca cater to Nadal's favourite pastimes, such as golf and fishing. And the property portfolio doesn't stop there. Nadal reportedly owns several residential properties in Spain. He may soon add an iconic address opposite Madrid's Supreme Court. Finally, through the MABEL Hospitality group, Nadal has stakes in several restaurants. He co-owns Tatel with Cristiano Ronaldo, bringing together two of Spain's biggest sporting stars. While still relentless on the court, Nadal has clearly mastered the business backhand. He's steadily built an empire that spans sport, hospitality and property.
