There's a simple joy in quoting the brilliant analogies of Eoghan Beecher. Another couple of absolute crackers from his recent session "You are not making enough money online" from last week's Fundraising Everywhere Individual Giving Conference: 1) When talking about removing friction from a donate page: "If you spend all your time advertising a shop, but you forget to open the door of the shop, then nobody is going to get into it." 2) When talking about how fundraisers need to stop viewing our donate pages like how WE would like to use them, and instead put ourselves in the shoes of our audience, first time donors, existing donors etc.: "When you go into your house and it's dark, you know where to turn on the light switch. As it's your house and you've been there thousands of times. If a stranger comes into your house, they're going to have to look for the light switch." Stupid is as stupid does. What will it cost each university to cancel commencement ceremonies in deference to protestors? Consider brand, reputation, loss of future donations, loss of government funding, lower enrollment, and the list goes on. You know what costs a lot less? Security. And the leadership of those institutions could easily tap their billions in endowments to support graduates, their families and the faculty. If they won’t take free advice, let’s talk value pricing.
