The 2024 primary season is well underway, and at Decision Desk HQ, we have already called 231 US House primary races this month. Results in a handful of key contests have been pretty surprising: moderate and independent-minded House Republicans are facing an unprecedented level of resistance in their re-election bids. Despite their extreme fundraising and institutional advantages, these candidates have barely managed to secure victories, if at all. This change is probably driven by the growing influence of conservative media sources and right-wing social media communities, which now rival traditional endorsements from establishment figures and paid media buys on the right. Read my latest piece in The Hill below, detailing this dynamic. https://lnkd.in/epS_4HKX

From “Lincoln 365,” by Arnold Kunst September 26 In the 1860 Presidential election Lincoln won California and Oregon as well as every Northern free state except New Jersey. It was enough to give him a comfortable Electoral College majority. On the face of it, that sounds very impressive. But unfortunately, there were three other major candidates for President that year. And in the popular vote Lincoln only won 39% - that is the smallest plurality of any victorious presidential candidate in all of American presidential history, before or since. Or, to put the case a little differently, at a time when the 15th President, James Buchanan, actually described himself as “the last President of the United States,” at a time when the nation was dissolving like snow in spring, the 16th President received a vote of no-confidence from 61% of the 1860 electorate. “Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson #lincoln365 #abelincoln #arnoldkunst #advicefromgrandpa #abe #honestabe #abrahamlincoln #presidentlincoln #presidentabrahamlincoln #advicefromgrandpa #wisdom #wisdomoftheages #practicaladvice #goodadvice #adviceyoucancounton #commonsense #people #kpresidentialelection #electoralcollegemajority #electoralcollege #veryimpressive #thepopularvote #plurality #smallestplurality #alittledifferently #jamesbuchanan #thelastpresidentoftheunitedstates #dissolve #likesnowinspring #thesixteenthpresident #voteofnoconfidence #courseyoudecideupon #youarewrong # courage #ralphwaldoemerson #sully #captainsullenberger #chesteysullenberger

Together, Mayors Grier Hopkins of Fairbanks and Suzanne LaFrance of Anchorage serve more than half the population of Alaska. They represent diverse communities separated by hundreds of miles – but both of them want to keep open primaries and #RankedChoiceVoting in Alaska. Why? Alaskan voters want their leaders to solve problems and get things done. Open primaries and RCV ended years of partisan gridlock in Alaska. There is now a productive state legislature that is putting the will of the voters above political gamesmanship. “We need a system where those serving in Juneau and Washington, D.C. are rewarded for their willingness to work across the aisle, not punished for it. As mayors of local communities that need state and federal action, we support a system that encourages working together and delivering results… Together, we ask that you join us in protecting our voting system and protecting our future — join us in voting no on Ballot Measure 2.”
OPINION: Unite communities across Alaska — vote no on Ballot Measure 2

Some context for those watching the US Senate race in West Virginia. Senate races are different than Gubernatorial races, and opponents certainly are different. But, this is how the Governor faired in 2020. #WestVirginia #Election2024 #Politics #governance #publicpolicy The top left is the % vote for Justice, and the top right is the % vote for his opponent, Ben Salango. The bottom left is Justices' win margin, and the bottom right is the total votes cast. The Governor won all 55 counties, but this shows the relative strength of support. West Virginia has no major cities on the scale of a place like PA or OH. But it's pretty easy to see that typical city/town-rural divide (even considering he won all 55 counties). As always, the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office made the data available and easy to use.
