With Vice President Kamala Harris making her Vice Presidential selection of Governor Tim Walz, it is clear both campaigns view this race as a base turnout election that trades the opportunity to bring non-base voters into their coalitions for efforts to push low propensity base voters to the polls. While #Harris doubled down on a #progressive Governor to excite her base, Donald #Trump doubled down on #MAGA with his Vice Presidential pick JD Vance. As we noted back in February, both "parties hyper focused on turning out their most loyal supporters" in this election and the two VP picks suggest that despite the Democratic ticket swap, that remains how the campaigns view this race. 💡 For #publicaffairs professionals supporting companies and industries, this means pressure from both sides as the twin tides of populism and progressivism battle it out for The White House. A very important read from Robert Reich about the real power in the MAGA party. I have the following friendly addenda: 1) Thiel, Musk and at least one other MAGA member of the PayPal “brat pack,” have something in common. They are young, extremely rich and can’t become U.S. President because they are—gasp—immigrants! Thiel is German and Musk and David Sacks are South African by birth. So what’s a guy to do? Blast off to Mars? [check] Name a lot of companies after stuff in “Lord of the Rings?” [check]. Pretend to be Ayn Rand-style lone heroic entrepreneurs while taking billions from the federal government and building personal wealth on the taxpayers’ backs [check]. Now what? Buy a couple of presidents to be their hand puppets? [underway]. 2) As Reich points out, Musk is the short money (Trump) and Thiel is the long money (Vance, a boy toy if there ever was one!). 3) The Republican Party won’t win any more elections because it doesn’t exist any more. And the MAGA party—which has taken over the name “Republican” is not conservative. Or libertarian. Or even republican. It’s fascist. Groan.

In the six+ weeks since Kamala Harris launched her campaign for President, according to FiveThirtyEight, polling on the congressional generic ballot, which measures which party voters want to control the House of Representatives, went from Republicans +.6% This represents Dems’ highest generic ballot lead since May of 2023 and is about where Republicans ended up in the generic ballot polling average in 2022 prior to winning House races by 2.8% for a net gain of 13 seats.
