A Mission People... Celebrate Hospital Week at Baptist Health System
We help people achieve health for life through compassionate care inspired by faith.
The word “hospital” and “hospice” are derived from the Latin word hospes, which means both “guest” and “host.
This history can direct ones thoughts towards hospitality.
The word “hospitality” is synonymous with words like…
“welcome, friendliness, warmth, generosity, cordiality, sociableness and openness”.
Pause a second an consider what is needed for someone in the hospital who experiences being…
lost, overwhelmed, out of control, injured, scared, angry, hurt, totally vulnerable.
In these cases, hospitality is precisely at the foundation
of what is needed to accompany our patients toward healing and wholeness.
Hospitals that practice holistic hospitality are safe havens for the sick and vulnerable.
Celebrating you this Hospital Week at BHS – What a Joy it is to serve hospitably together!
THIS WEEK is our 2nd Anniversary.. and we're #movingforward to deepen our work to empower residents, staff and communities. We will continue to be:
🌟 Focusing on the people in nursing homes.
We have four projects underway being pilot tested in order for best practices to be promote nationally. These projects specifically empower residents to have control over their personal and community life, and #CNAs to grow in their career and nursing home roles.
👉 We'll be releasing a microsite later this week with "how to" guides.
🌟 Strengthening our voice for consensus of solutions.
We're continuing to bring together diverse voices to identify solutions (big and small) we can all agree on.
👉 This week we'll have three consensus-backed federal policy recommendations to move forward with necessary shifts.
🌟 Seeking partners as we can't do it alone.
👉 We need help funding and scaling other promising projects to: incentivize household models, ensure surveyors have training in person-centered care, and make person-centered care planning a part of nursing home electronic health records. Can you introduce us?

Compassionate Communities Essentials for Hospices
Ambition 6 of the Palliative and End of Life Ambitions National Framework focuses on Communities being prepared to help - Compassionate communities as an approach helps address this challenge.
We at Compassionate Communities UK have found in our training sessions that considerable confusion exists about how to approach engagement and development in compassionate community projects. There is a tendency to think about compassionate communities as something on its own rather than something that can be integrated into the routine ’business’ of hospices, enhancing the day to day clinical care and seeing it as a natural part of conversations of any sort with communities members. There is also a tendency to approach compassionate communities as another service that the hospice provides for the community, doing something ’to’ communities rather than discovering the rich resources and treasures that are already out there.
To try and help develop existing programmes, and to stimulate interest in new ways of working, we are putting on this session. We will explore discovering community treasures, realigning services in the context of community and how to start community conversations from a public health palliative care perspective.

This is something we hear so often from patients. By creating an Advance Directive or Living Will, you’re giving your loved ones the gift of peace during uncertain times.

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month
This month, let's shine a light on the life-changing impact of Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC). For children with serious illnesses, PPC is about so much more than medical treatment—it’s about providing comfort, support, and dignity from the very start of their journey. It helps children and families cope not only with the physical aspects of illness but also with the emotional, social, and spiritual challenges that come with it.
💡 What makes PPC so essential?
PPC focuses on improving quality of life, easing suffering, and supporting families in making important decisions. It’s holistic care that wraps around the entire family, from diagnosis through treatment—and, when necessary, during end-of-life care.
Despite these profound benefits, only 75% of U.S. children’s hospitals offer PPC services. We need to do better.
Research shows that early involvement in palliative care leads to better outcomes, offering families critical emotional support and helping them make informed, confident decisions.
We must raise awareness and advocate for broader access to pediatric palliative and hospice care, ensuring that every child and family can get the compassionate care they deserve.
Together, we can push for early, ongoing support that meets the real needs of kids and families facing serious health challenges. ❤️
