The number of Scottish employers committed to Living Wage Foundation's real living wage has reached a record high of 3,500! It’s Living Wage Week and we are celebrating the thousands of employers in Scotland who go beyond the minimum to ensure that employees have security and can earn enough to live on. The real Living Wage is the only rate that is designed to meet the cost of living. It makes a tangible difference to workers and their families at a time when household bills are at an unprecedented high. Together, Living Wage employers are leading the way in helping to free people from in-work poverty. Their commitment allows workers to live a decent and dignified life while providing them with the security of knowing their wages will rise in line with the cost of living. This week, we highlight the difference that accredited Living Wage employers have made and the collective impact they have had towards the ambition of making Scotland a fair and compassionate nation. Employers choose to pay the real Living Wage (currently £12 in Scotland) because they know that it makes a difference and it’s the right thing to do. The real Living Wage is calculated according to the cost of living. With rising energy, food, housing bills and more, this is a lifeline for workers. On Monday 1st April the government increased the mandatory National Living Wage to £11.44. A worker paid the real #LivingWage, earns an extra £1,092 a year more than a worker on the National Living Wage. This difference could pay for 18 weeks’ worth of food shops, or 12 weeks of housing & energy costs. Over 3,500 employers across Scotland are now accredited Living Wage employers and we are incredibly grateful to them for choosing to support their staff by paying the real Living Wage. We had an interesting Council meeting this afternoon with the living wage making a late but important addition to our agenda. As you would expect our discussion surrounded good governance, or lack of it, in decision making. If we look at the figures on face value, an increase for those who desperately need it along with a boost to government coffers, the decision seems natural. But Government must first understand its purpose. It must see the Island and what is good for the residents as a whole. The increase will disproportionately affect smaller businesses and those in certain sectors, hospitality, nursing, nurseries and charities (the third sector). If we lose these industries or even a proportion of them who will step in? Who will look after our elderly? Who will look after our tourists? Who will take over childcare, already very difficult to secure? What will happen to the owners and employees of organisations that cannot continue? We already have a mental health crisis, a decision such as this will have a knock effect on the wellbeing of many involved. The Government must take an holistic approach to any decision it makes and not become greedy for more tax revenue at any cost. Before it makes any decision and ignores the advice of consultants it must undertake a full risk analysis and actively listen to the opinions of others. Following an analysis by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), it's been revealed that almost half of all care workers in England are paid less than the real living wage; this equates to around 400,000 workers being paid less than £12 an hour. Campaigners are therefore urging the next government to ensure that care workers receive the living wage. We are proud to be one of 3,750 Living Wage Employers in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Did you know that 94% of Living Wage employers have reported that their business has benefitted from paying the real Living Wage? - 87% say it improved their reputation - 66% say it helped them differentiate from others in their industry - 90% of consumers were more likely to buy a product or service from an employer who pays their staff the real Living Wage - 60% said it improved retention of existing employees and recruitment of new employees into their business - Over half of employers said paying a real Living Wage has improved the quality of applications for jobs - Investors want to see employers be more socially responsible. 85% of investors stated that investment in employees is an important factor in their decision-making, with 62% saying this is specifically the case for Living Wage Employer accreditation (Figures provided by Living Wage Foundation)
