Alternaleaf has wrapped its SXSW Sydney debut where General Manager of Technology and Product, Myles Lawlor, participated in the Women Love Tech panel. With only 15% of women in STEM roles in Australia, Myles spoke about the benefits of having a great mentor to help women break into the industry. - Find a mentor who is a reflection of who you want to be or the perception of where you want to be, find that person. - A great mentor is someone who is a great listener, approachable, and someone who is able to talk through an issue. - A great mentor will be available to you, they are there to listen and say “what you are feeling is ok and normal” and provide guidance on how you can navigate a situation. And Myles’ three key tips for someone looking for a mentor: 1. I encourage anyone who is new to Australia or looking for a mentor to find a sports team, you might find inspiration and guidance from people outside of your work norm. 2. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone for advice or to talk through an issue—you never know if you don’t ask. 3. To know what a good mentor is, you have to learn what a bad one is, expose yourself to industry events and network. You will find people with interesting perspectives that might give you the edge to overcome your challenges. Inclusion isn’t just a day on the calendar – it’s a commitment we make every day. With the whirlwind of Grace Hopper Celebration earlier this month, we missed honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 14. But today, and every day, we stand with Indigenous communities, recognizing their rich cultures, resilience, and contributions to tech and beyond.     Indigenous women and girls face steep tech barriers—only 20% of reservation schools offer computer science, and they earn under 1% of these degrees. Young people bear the brunt of much of society’s judgment. Adults are often quick to criticize and judge younger generations. Parents’ fears and anxieties are also all too frequently projected onto young people, who find themselves in conflict with the grown-ups in their lives merely for being themselves and trying to find their place in this world. While these generational divides are natural to an extent, we should always make an effort to celebrate young people around the world for what they can and do accomplish. Younger generations consistently display energy, excitement, passion, a sense of what is right, and a willingness to work for what they believe in. By appreciating these positive traits, we can more clearly foster their hopes and dreams of making the world a better place and empower them to thrive. This World Youth Skills Day, take some time to acknowledge the incredible skills and drive that the young people in your life bring to the table each day.
