#ThrowbackThursday: This Thursday, we're revisiting a blog titled “Solar Farm Proposed in Tallahassee” by Logan Shewmaker. This blog was originally published on June 2, 2015. This blog reports on the proposal for the creation of a solar farm in Tallahassee. There are a lot of benefits to having a solar farm, however, it does come at a high cost. The project would be able to produce 10 megawatts, which is 1% of the energy Tallahassee uses. City officials are hoping that a federal tax credit will persuade third-party companies to join the project. Solar power prices have gone down, but it is still significantly more expensive to utilize it over natural gas. It may take years for solar farms to be affordable for a city like Tallahassee. Closed landfills are emerging as a game-changing solution to land shortages for renewable energy projects. With over 10,000 closed landfills in the U.S., these underutilized sites present a unique opportunity to expand solar capacity without taking up valuable agricultural or residential land. ⚡️ Countries like the U.S., France, and the U.K. are investing heavily in these "brightfield" projects. In the U.S. alone, solar developments on landfills have increased by 80% in the last five years. New Jersey’s 25.6 MW Mount Olive project is a leading example, demonstrating how landfill solar farms can generate affordable energy, create local jobs, and boost tax revenue for communities.
