If you’re in Calgary or Winnipeg and want to dive into the burgeoning tech scene, just ask yourself, “What are you doing this Thursday?” Tech Thursday brings together hundreds of attendees every week — from start-ups to senior founders — for panel discussions, professional development, and networking. After two years of fostering tech communities under Neo Financial, Tech Thursday has spun out into a company all its own. Coming out of the pandemic, Tech Thursday began as a response to the Winnipeg tech community’s need for in-person connections. Now, it's a weekly fixture, thanks to Philippe Burns and Paul Card. What started with 10 participants in Winnipeg has grown to over 100 weekly attendees and about 125 in Calgary. “We’ve heard from founders and investors that we really were supporting the ecosystem. It was a realization that, ‘Oh, there’s something valuable here. We could really make something out of this,’” says Burns, co-founder of Tech Thursday. Neo Financial remains a title sponsor, alongside other partners including SkipTheDishes, Manitoba Technology Accelerator, and Calgary Economic Development. The secret to Tech Thursday’s success? A focus on community development, not just recruitment or sales pitches. It’s about learning, sharing ideas, and connecting, says Burns. Still buzzing from All Tech Is Human's Responsible Tech DC: A Better Tech Future for Youth! Quite a remarkable mix of people across civil society, government, industry, and academia came together to tackle thorny tech & society issues! Many people are surprised by All Tech Is Human's pull in getting hundreds of people to show up no matter where we hold a gathering. What is the secret sauce?? Well, we hold gatherings, not events. Let me explain. There is a key difference in the attraction, which is why our gathering in DC drew individuals who traveled from hours away and even from outside of the US. Every gathering we hold in NYC (our home base) has been at capacity, and this is repeated when we go to London or San Francisco. I dare say we are onto something. It is all quite intentional. Here's the difference: All Tech Is Human is a shift away from traditional thought leadership, where the ideas of a few are supposed to be disseminated to the many. Instead, we are structured to incorporate the ideas of many into a flywheel of collective insight and action. Events are based on traditional thought leadership. A model that, quite frankly, is not a good fit to solve complex tech & society issues. Thorny issues require the participation of a broad range of actors. We don't hold events. Yes, we have incredible speakers on stage but these individuals are part of the larger community--not held at a remove. A gathering is about the community, and the attraction is about being part of that community. So the motivation to take part in an All Tech Is Human gathering is a strong one because people don't want to be fans--they want to be active participants. We don't need more events. Well, what a week it's been! Birmingham Tech Week was a real hit - huge congratulations to Yiannis Maos MBE, Katharine Fuller, Victoria Pargetter-Garner, Jason Sahota and the wider TechWM team! It was great to attend so many events across the city (including last night's launch of the It Starts campaign by the West Midlands Growth Company) - two key messages stood out for me. First: The region has a thriving tech sector, one which is driven by an incredibly talented, young and diverse population. Given the youth unemployment challenge in the West Mids, it's more important than ever that the public, private and education sectors work together to enable those young people to both aspire to and take the opportunity here. Second: in an increasingly competitive environment for investment, telling our story matters. Arguably more importantly within that is centering that same young and diverse talent in those stories. Because if we don't tell our stories, who will? But this isn't just about FDI - although that's clearly important. It's about supporting and enabling firms to grapple with and drive digital transformation across a range of sectors and industries. It's ultimately about investing in people - in their drive, their ambition, their clear love of this place and their desire to propel it to greatness. This is a vital consideration, I think, in any Modern Industrial Strategy and/or Local Growth Plan. I heard - pretty clearly and unambiguously - that the private sector is ready to do more. But national, regional and local governments must rise to the challenge, too. A great week, then - let's hope It Starts Here and that the energy, optimism and momentum continues to build.
