Whenever I pull up to a stop light, I can't help but sneak a peek at the drivers next to me. I frequently find them gazing off into the nostalgic distance, belting out the lyrics to their favorite tunes as if alone in the shower instead of in full public view. Sometimes, they dance passionately with the steering wheel; other times, I see tears in their eyes. Drivers often sing about new loves, loves lost, and loves that are too hot not to trot out in front of everyone. Of course, I also hear some raucous songs about dancing, drinking, drugs, and backing things up. The visual arts do a great job of making the soul visible, but music gives our soul a voice when we can't find the words to express our feelings. On a social level, however, songs can unite groups to express common sentiments about their times. Some of these songs can even become anthems for particular generations, such as John Lennon’s “Imagine” (1971), Guns N' Roses's "Sweet Child of Mine" (1998), or Snoop Dogg's “Drop It Like It's Hot” (2004), to name but a few. We all have that one song that tugs at our heartstrings more than we'd like to admit, of get us dancing in our car seats. Some songs can make us sentimental at a stop light, whereas others remind us of our high school days. What was the most popular song when you graduated high school? You know, the one that was constant rotation. I couldn’t remember, but fortunately, the journalist Ellen Gutoskey at Mental Floss compiled a list of the most popular songs from every graduation season between 1960 and 2023. I know you can't resist taking a peek, but would you dare to share that one song from your high school year with us? #music #singers #rockandroll #rap #hiphop #memories #nostalgia #socialdentity #emotions #societyandculture #culture #highschool #songs #cars #drivers #dancing

Band was brilliant last night! meeting my new bandmates was a blast, especially since we were all X-er or Boomers - ya, ya, let the jokes come out. My co-guitarist is brilliant and very good, so I made sure to work with him, than against him. I had learned from experience, that "serving the song", was better than "serving one's ego". We focused initially on "Don't Bring Me Down" - ELO. The intro has a four note "walk-down", followed by an A-maj downstroke tempo to bring in the singer. Rather than both of us doing this and possibly confusing the tune, I suggested that he do the walk-down and I jump in. My "meter" is pretty good and our teacher was on drums, so it all worked out great. Our teacher later complimented us as having been the first band in a long time, to nail an arrangement that quickly. I think that has to be because we've all been playing in and out of bands for so long and needed "this" as our creative outlet. It's just crazy how much "band life" can be like "work life". Everyone has a part to play in the success of the group. Things I've learned from band over the years: - Serve the tune, not your ego. - Your drummer needs to be able to count to four (musicians understand this) - It's not the end-of-the-world, if you miss a note, just jump back in on the next bar. - Have fun. It's called "playing music" for a reason. - Teamwork leads to camaraderie. Camaraderie leads to friendships. - Practicing with a metronome, is not just a metaphor for a "life in tempo". - Rock out with your heart out and people will take ni your energy. Peace out - jp (just pierre) #burntheday

The Voice is the only competition show I truly love. In the first place, I'm a music geek, have played saxophone for 4 decades and can tear up at a 3-note intro of certain songs. This show is special, though. The talent they find, and the philosophy of the whole setup with coaches from all genres to impart wisdom as they "compete." It's just the most beautiful thing to see these (mostly) young people becoming real artists in real time. There have been multiple disabled people on the show, including artists with hearing loss, autistic artists, people of every race, some as old as 60 and as young as 13. The coaches are always complimentary and constructive as they also complete to create the best team that will produce the ultimate winner. Guest mentors come from all genres of music and everyone is focused on guiding the contestants to produce their best performance. It really makes me think of how our workplaces could all use this kind of structure/organization. Or at least the attitude of promoting and encouraging excellence in all others through non-competition.

A question I can't stop thinking about… What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? I believe so much of adulthood is about trying to reclaim the curiosity, joy, and passion for life we had as children. One of the best ways to do that is by reconnecting with an activity that made time fly when you were young. A sport. A hobby. A creative pursuit. For me, it's making music. Yes, I used to make music. No, you can’t listen to it—lol. I've recently started a DJ course to reignite some of my music-making joy and pick up some new skills along the way. My challenge to you: Reply to this with your answer to the question above. ♻️ Repost this so we can spread the conversation. 📌 If you like this, you’ll love my newsletter. It's Summer time ☀️ and as the temp rises, so does the demand for unforgettable summer anthems. We spoke with some of our experts on what it takes to write the Perfect Summer Hit. Here's what they had to say: 1. 🗣️ Catchy Hook: A memorable hook is essential. Your chorus should be easy to sing along to and stick in listeners' minds long after the song ends. Think about the hooks from past summer hits and what made them so unforgettable. 2. 😎 Feel-Good Vibes: Summer songs are all about positive, feel-good energy. Incorporate upbeat rhythms and uplifting lyrics that capture the essence of summer fun and relaxation. 3. 🎶 Relatable Lyrics: Write lyrics that people can connect with. Paint a picture of the perfect summer day that listeners can envision and relate to. 4.💃🏽 Danceable Beat: People want to move to summer hits, so make sure your rhythm is infectious and makes people want to hit the dance floor. 5. 👯🏾 Collaborate: Don’t hesitate to collaborate with other artists, producers, and songwriters. Fresh perspectives and different styles can add a unique touch to your track and increase its appeal. ⏰ Timely Release: Timing is everything. Aim to release your summer hit in late spring or early summer to give it plenty of time to gain traction throughout the season. Remember, a great summer hit not only dominates the charts but also becomes a soundtrack to countless summer memories for your fans. #MusicIndustry #SummerHit #SongwritingTips #MusicProduction #IndependentArtists #weunifimusic #fiercelyindependent
