Empowering Vulnerable Families in Guinea through Free Medical Care In Guinea, access to essential healthcare services has been a significant challenge, especially for vulnerable families. However, recent initiatives are making a profound impact on the lives of many. The introduction of free medical care for children under five and pregnant women, including prenatal care and delivery services, has been a game-changer. This initiative ensures that even the most vulnerable families can access the healthcare they need without the burden of financial strain. By investing in the health of mothers and children, we are laying the foundation for a healthier, more prosperous Guinea. As a member of the World Health Organization Civil Society Commission, an accredited non-State actor of the World Health Organization African Region Committee, and a member of the WHO Implementing Best Practices #IBP Network, The Wellbeing Foundation Africa and I, were pleased to participate in and applaud the launch of the Networks of Care for Maternal and Newborn Health WHO's Implementation Guidance today. Networks of Care (NoC) are an innovative approach to strengthening primary care and maternal and newborn health services, focusing on cultivating relationships among health system stakeholders and enhancing relational elements such as multidisciplinary teamwork, leadership, and communication. These networks exist in diverse contexts, with existing studies demonstrating their effectiveness in improving quality of care and clinical outcomes for mothers and newborns. This first implementation guidance on Networks of Care for Maternal and Newborn Health provides a comprehensive framework that outlines the structural and relational elements that compose these networks and presents an overview of the evidence supporting their efficacy, through offering practical examples for establishing NoC’s, addressing critical financing, and outlining considerations for sustaining these networks over time. Additionally, it identifies development areas for future research to further advance the field. #WBFA recognises that empowered and educated patients are essential to a population’s good health and wellbeing outcomes, therefore the foundation is committed to the NoCs approach as a promising pathway to enhancing primary health care, which is vital for delivering 90% of universal health care services. By promoting strong linkages between community and hospital settings, Networks of Care not only foster collaborative management but also ensure the continuity of care for mothers and newborns. As we move forward, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa and I will actively engage in implementing these strategies to improve quality of care and outcomes, ensuring that every woman and newborn receives the compassionate, person-centred care they deserve. #WellbeingForAll #PartnershipsForChange #NetworksofCare #MNCH

On 17th November 2024, the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria ( MWAN) and her collaborators ( ACEPHAP, CSSI, Pathfinder, BMGF) commemorated World Prematurity Day 2024, raising awareness through workshops, outreach programs, stakeholders and media engagements. 🔷We emphasized the urgent need for action to reduce the burden of prematurity and improve outcomes for over 13 million babies born too soon each year. 🔷In Nigeria, tackling the burden of prematurity demands immediate and decisive action. 🔹There is an urgent need to improve access to quality antenatal care which is critical to identifying and managing high-risk pregnancies, especially those complicated by hypertensive disorders and infections. 🔹Adequate training of healthcare providers, and equipping facilities with essential supplies can indirectly reduce preterm births by improving maternal health. 🔹Additionally, evidence-based practices such as the use of antenatal corticosteroids for fetal lung maturation and kangaroo mother care post-delivery should be adopted to improve the outcomes of babies born premature. 🔹Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal deaths, is closely linked to preterm births, as it complicates pregnancies that may result in early delivery. 🔹 Adequate training of healthcare providers on prompt recognition and timely management of PPH is key to preventing countless maternal deaths from PPH. 🔹Together, we can build a future where no baby is born too soon to thrive. #healingwiththeloveofamother

Is the customer always right...? This article makes me question what quality in healthcare truly means. What happened? a. Clients complained that the cost of antenatal tests were too high and frequent. b. Facility reduced the frequency of urinalysis testing (screening for pre-eclampsia). c. Some clients were happy. d. A few Pre-eclampsia cases were not identified promptly, increasing risk of complications. Post project Aisha: e. ANC checklist was instituted f. Urinalysis testing was re-commenced at every antenatal visit. g. More pre-eclampsia cases were promptly identified, reducing risk of complications to clients. Learnings: The customer is always right, only in matters of taste. In a field like healthcare where there is a lot of asymmetrical information, we cannot afford to give in to the every whim and caprice of our clients. Especially when it may compromise on the quality of care they receive.
Showcasing Impact: Project Aisha Supports Improvement of Maternal Care at Matador Medicare Services, Lagos In a quest to raise the standard of maternal care, Matador Medicare recently embarked on a transformative journey with the adoption of quality Antenatal Care (ANC) checklist, which is one of the innovative quality initiatives being implemented by Project Aisha across selected facilities in Lagos and Kaduna states. This checklist seeks to guide care providers in providing comprehensive care to pregnant women, enabling prompt identification of pregnancy-related complications to enhance maternal and newborn outcomes.
