We have published our Annual Report and Accounts for the year 2023-24. The report explains more about the work we have done during the past year, highlights our achievements and progress against our corporate objectives, and shows how we have spent our budget. Some of the key facts and figures for 2023-24 include: ✅ We removed 400 inactive charities from the Scottish Charity Register who failed to submit their accounts to us. ✅ We launched a new online annual return to provide more tailored support and guidance to help charities get it right first time. ✅ We refreshed our inquiry policy and launched a new online form for concerns. The number of concerns received which were not appropriate for OSCR to deal with reduced by 5% compared to the previous year. ✅ 100% of applications from charities to make certain changes (such as changing their name or purposes) were completed within 28 days. Charities often set income targets based on both operating costs they need to cover AND their aspirational financial goals. This gets translated into fundraising targets where need and desire are not differentiated. The issue is most trusts and foundations are funding based on need – especially in the crowded landscape we have seen in the last decade or so. Work with your managers to ensure your trust fundraising target is based on operational need (e.g. actual costs for actual/intended projects) and focus your proposal and applications on this need. When you’re up against another charity with urgent need, this focus can level the playing field and give you a better chance at receiving funding. #TrustFundraising

Found on their website or registration record (Charity Commission, OSCR, Charity Commission of Northern Ireland, sometimes IRS 990 Form) a trust’s annual accounts hold a wealth of information for a fundraiser – what they support, when they meet, how much they give per award, who they’ve given to, their trustees, and governance structure. It can also give insight into the history of the trust and its founder and any future plans (such as reduced giving or winding up plans). If you have no other information sources, the accounts should provide enough info to help you make (or not make) an approach to a trust. #TrustFundraising
