What Is Automation? Automation is using technology to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. It's like having a robot or computer take care of the repetitive or complex activities that humans have hitherto carried out. This technology-driven approach aims to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and reduce human error. Why Is Automation Important? There are several compelling reasons as to why businesses are increasingly investing in automation: Higher Efficiency and Productivity: Automation reduces the dependence on manual labor, which results in making processes faster and uniform. Automated systems are much faster and more accurate than human beings, therefore a rise in output and quality. 1. Improved Accuracy: Automated systems execute Pre-designed instructions with a high level of accuracy, ruling out a range of human errors. This becomes significant in industries like pharmaceuticals and electronic manufacturing, where product quality is of paramount importance. 2. Increased Safety: Some tasks are dangerous or repetitive and are potential hazards for human personnel. Automation leaves all such tasks to it, and there is less chance of accidents and injuries taking place. For example; the automation allows remote-controlled mining and construction operations in hazardous locations. 3. Cost Savings: Automation for repetitive tasks definitely saves on labor costs and enhances operational efficiency. For example, hiring an employee to move items in a building is not relatively efficient compared to automated systems. 4. Scalability: Automation allows a business to scale its operations without increasing human resources in the same proportion. It allows companies to handle larger workloads efficiently and, hence compete with large competitors. In short, the adoption of automation is the key to remaining competitive within such a high-paced business environment. Process is a myth. Here is why. If you take a task and break it down into smaller tasks, each neatly fitting into a box described by 2 words. Each little box contains the subtasks and a little bit (maybe a big bit) of error. Because each is an approximation of the things needed to complete that task and an approximation of that even being the sub task. So each process step contains an error. Now add all those steps together and you compound the error. So the chance of the big task being accurately described by all those sub tasks is statistically remote. Process is a fantasy not a reality. In reality the process doesn't exist. Now in manufacturing, where the process is done by machines we can see all of those errors and we use machines to do the work anyway. So repetition and consistency of inputs is guaranteed by standards and tolerances. But in service it is people who have to flex to deal with the errors. Then there is the problem that the process needs to adapt to changes in the inputs, environment, over time, with no tolerances over those inputs. Again the people are the ones that provide that flexibility. Now add the stress of hitting targets and quotas, while closely adhering to an inflexible process and you have a recipe for burnout. This is why your process doesn't represent reality. Now add an efficiency drive where you want to remove waste or spare capacity. What are those calculations based on? If we go back to our process and we "measure" the average duration of each step. Each of those averages contains error. Add them together and you get a bigger error, compounded. Now cut that by your improvement target and you end up with a number which is nothing like representative of how long the process should take. Guess what happens next? Process myths are why we have no service anymore. Because simplistic linear process thinkers killed it with their hopeless lack of knowledge, skills and experience together with the wrong thinking about how to understand work. Taylor was wrong with scientific management and Lean belongs in factories. It has no place in service and neither does anything else that preaches efficiency. What is worse, whole consultancies are still selling the efficiency fantasy. It's a lie. Always has been but the ones who pay are your own workforce and your customers. It will be interesting to see who takes up this challenge to discuss this. I'm pretty sure those selling the efficiency myth will steer clear as they know I speak the truth. If not then welcome.
