Small gestures at scale make a big impact, so why not consider what you could donate to the Old Fire Station’s Big Give campaign. https://lnkd.in/eFJ5QeVH People need a place to feel welcome, express ideas and passions, think through changing times, or escape into art, dance or a show. These opportunities often don’t exist for people with fewer resources, and the combination of Covid, the cost-of-living crisis and stretched frontline services means there are many people who are not being represented or included in the arts. Through working more inclusively, over the next year the Old Fire Station in Oxford expects a footfall of 25,000 people in our building. Some will come to see a show or join a workshop, some will be moving on from homelessness or social crises, others will be volunteers, trainees or refugee women working for Damascus Rose Kitchen. Our work helps people feel part of a community and less isolated, make connections and build networks, improve wellbeing and a sense of purpose, feel heard, represented and valued.

Barti Art has four incredible years under its belt and there's no sign of us running out of steam yet, in fact, it’s time to crank it up a notch! We need you to create art inspired by Barti Rum... it's pretty much that simple. Your art will find it’s way into our exhibition held at a hospitality venue in Pembrokeshire over February half term. The entries are judged and the public have the opportunity to bid on their favourite pieces. Three winners win cash, the top prize being £500, meanwhile all of the cash raised by the auction goes to charity. So, a record-breaking #HongKongArbitrationWeek is approaching with various events jam-packed for the week (21-25 October 2024). If you are anything like me, you are already looking at all the events and developing a huge headache because let's be real, professional networking with hundreds of people and digesting all of the invaluable information you will be sure to receive at the millions of events (fine, I'm exaggerating, but there sure as heck are a lot of things squeezed into a span of a few days) is quite honestly more work and takes more out of you than actual work itself. Or, I am just old - likely the latter. But it needs to be done and what better time to do it than at one of the leading (and if I recall correctly, one of the first, if not the first) arbitration weeks worldwide. However, this post is not a plug (or gripe) for HKAW, which needs no further promotions since it has broken all previous registration records (kudos to the HKIAC team who have been working non-stop behind the scenes). Rather, this is a post for another record-breaking and over-subscribed event during the week, Hong Kong Arbitration Charity Ball! The Hong Kong Arbitration Charity Ball is a staple event started by the one and only Gavin Denton more than a decade ago and now organized by the Hong Kong Arbitration Charity Ball Committee, with the tremendous support of our amazing Coordinator, Ms. Maricel Somerville. Thanks to the dedication and support of the #HongKong legal community as well as the #InternationalArbitration Community in general, we are FULLY SOLD OUT of tables AND individual seats (though if you sweet talk Maricel, she can probably figure out how to squeeze one or two more of you in....after killing me for posting this). For those of you who are part of the 550 or so people attending this special evening and joining us onboard the Hong Kong Arbitration Charity Ball Orient Express, please do check out the website (www.hkacb.net) for details, not only for the evening but also the amazing raffle and auction prizes available. Retrospective research indicates that as many as 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18.1 However, because child sexual abuse is by its very nature secretive, many of these cases are never reported. ❌Myth: A child is most likely to be sexually abused by a stranger. ✔ Fact: Children are most often sexually abused by someone they know and trust. Approximately three quarters of reported cases of child sexual abuse are committed by family members or other individuals who are considered part of the victim’s “circle of trust.”2 ❌Myth: Children who are sexually abused will never recover. ✔Fact: Many children are quite resilient, and with a combination of effective counseling and support from their parents or caregivers, children can and do recover from such experiences. As a charity auctioneer, arriving early to an event is one of the best ways to set the stage for a successful auction, as it’s about establishing trust with the guests. 💡 When I arrive early, I can mingle, introduce myself as the charity auctioneer, and learn about the guests’ passion for the cause. These conversations give me valuable insights into what motivates them to bid, which helps me tailor my approach. By the time the auction begins, I’m no longer just the “auctioneer,” but someone they feel they know and trust. 🤝 Building trust is key to any successful auction. As a charity auctioneer, I need to make sure the guests feel confident in me and my ability to lead the auction effectively. By arriving early, I can show my commitment to the cause, engage in meaningful conversations, and make sure the guests feel comfortable and excited to participate. Plus, early interactions help me gauge the energy in the room. I can sense who’s particularly enthusiastic about certain auction items, allowing me to bring that extra spark into the auction when it matters most. ⚡ Ultimately, being a charity auctioneer isn’t just about calling bids—it's about creating an environment where people feel connected and ready to give generously.
