The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-5), commenced in Busan, South Korea earlier this week. Our team, Umesh Madhavan (Research Director), Ellen Martin (Senior Advisor), and Shamina Mohamed (Communications Manager) were on the ground, engaging with partners, and leading conversations on key topics including financing and a just transition for the informal sector. As the negotiations enter the final phase, we urge governments and key decision-makers to move towards an ambitious, robust, and inclusive legally binding instrument to effectively tackle plastic pollution. #INC5 #plasticpollution #oceanplastic #sustainability #wastemanagement #circularsolutions #recycling
Is this friendly approach towards the plastic industry working at all? Should we shift to class action lawsuits in both national and international courts? The contamination of waste pickers reminds me of the DuPont case as a solid precedent. But instead, for now we just have red carpets and fancy meetings. There is definitely something rotten in this kingdom of Denmark.
