The Connection Between Purpose and Employee Engagement Have you noticed how some people are just in the zone at work, while others are doing just what’s required? Sometimes this is also described to me as proactive versus reactive/clock watching. The difference often comes down to one thing: Purpose. When employees understand and believe in the purpose behind their work, they’re more engaged, more creative, and more loyal. A Deloitte study showed that employees who feel a strong connection to their company’s purpose are 3 times more likely to stay with the company long-term. So, how can you help your team connect with their purpose? Start by sharing stories that illustrate the impact of their work. And no, it doesn’t have to be life-saving surgery or groundbreaking technology. There will be loads of things they do that have an impact, one that either they haven’t seen or have begun to take for granted. As a case in point I caught up with a past client the other week and they reminded me of a conversation we'd had and the impact it had at the time, they also mentioned the future impact and outcome. I remembered the conversation but didn't know of the future outcome. Here’s the thing, that conversation was me ON PURPOSE, the outcome I could never have known or predicted, and again it was so beautifully connected to my purpose.
