In rural South Africa, there is more intolerance towards the LGBTQI+ community compared to the urban areas. This can be attributed to the success of advocacy and educational programs about human rights and acceptance in towns and cities. There is a lack of these in the rural hinterland. Honouring Human Rights South Africa's Bill of Rights states that, "Everyone has a right to life, equality and human dignity." On March 21 each year, South Africa celebrates that ideal by honouring the 69 lives lost in Sharpeville on 21 March, 1960 when police opened fire on a peaceful crowd protesting the Pass Laws. 🌍 Today is International Human Rights Day 🌍 On this day, we commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—a global pledge enshrining the inalienable rights of all people. Yet, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres aptly stated this year, "Human rights are under assault." As we reflect on this, we also mark the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign to end all forms of gender-based violence. Under the theme "Rise up against gender-based violence," KAIROS has amplified the voices of partners and human rights defenders around the world, including peacebuilders in South Sudan, the DRC, Colombia, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Palestine, as well as Indigenous organizations and migrant justice groups here in Canada. These partners inspire hope through action as they: ✨ Support survivors ✨ Defend women’s rights and gender justice ✨ Advocate for accountability and bold, nonviolent action Despite the challenges, these organizations continue to work tirelessly to uphold human dignity, protect our planet, and demand justice. They remind us that human rights are not just ideals—they are essential to building a just and compassionate world.
