The "Burke Bridge", both figurately and literally, is an exceptionally suited commemoration for this nature enthusiast, environmental advocate and friend to many. Ann E. Gillespie, CEO of Collington, A Kendal Affiliate, added, "The bridge we dedicate today symbolizes connection—between people, between ideas, and between our community and the natural world around us. It is a fitting tribute to Mike, who dedicated so much of his time and energy to fostering connections that would lead to a healthier, more sustainable environment." Why are we celebrating #WorldOceansDay on The Underline? 💚🌊 Even though we are not directly on the ocean, The Underline begins at the River Room, which is located on the Miami River. From there, you might even catch a glimpse of our local friend, the manatee! The Miami River connects to Biscayne Bay, making it crucial to keep the river healthy for the animals that call it home and for the bay it feeds into. Our efforts to preserve the Miami River ultimately impact the health of our oceans. How do we support our oceans? One significant way we can support the ocean at The Underline is by using our trash and recycling receptacles. Proper disposal of garbage and recyclables ensures they do not end up in the river and, eventually, the ocean. Additionally, many natural features on The Underline help maintain the health of our waterways. This includes bioswales that filter and manage stormwater before runoff with debris ends up in the Miami River. This filtered water supports our native environment, recharges groundwater, and helps create a greener Miami. Learn more about our environmental features by participating in Climate Champs, a curriculum supported by the Peacock Foundation that works to educate Miami's future (and current!) environmental stewards: https://lnkd.in/ggyAhE38 #TheUnderline #Miami #Environment City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, Miami DDA

🌍🍃 Happy World Environment Day! 🍃🌍 Today, we celebrate the beauty and importance of our natural world, and there’s no better way to do that than by remembering one of America’s greatest conservationists: Theodore Roosevelt. 🌲🦅 As the 26th President of the United States, Roosevelt was a pioneering force in the conservation movement. He established the U.S. Forest Service and signed into law the creation of five National Parks, 18 National Monuments, and 150 National Forests. 🌿🏞️ Roosevelt once said, "The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value." His forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship is as relevant today as it was over a century ago. 🌟 This World Environment Day, let’s honor Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy by committing to protect and preserve our planet for future generations. Whether it’s by reducing waste, conserving water, planting trees, or supporting policies that protect natural habitats, every action counts. 🌳💧 Join us in celebrating the environment and the enduring impact of Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation efforts. Together, we can make a difference! 🌍💚 #WorldEnvironmentDay #TheodoreRoosevelt #Conservation #Sustainability #ProtectOurPlanet #EnvironmentalStewardship #Nature

An inspiring piece from Los Angeles Times on the power of younger generations to drive change. Melissa Hart shares a touching story of her daughter turning a simple beach visit into an impromptu cleanup, reminding us of the importance of protecting our environment. It’s a testament to the passion many young people have for our planet and the proactive steps they are willing to take. How are you supporting the next generation in their environmental efforts? Let’s encourage all actions, big and small, to create a more sustainable future. https://bit.ly/4cNcSC8 #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalProtection #YouthLeadership

🌲🌿 Honoring Teddy Roosevelt: Champion of Conservation 🏞️🔬 As I reflect on the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, I am inspired by his visionary leadership in conservation and natural resource management. Roosevelt’s dedication to preserving our nation’s natural treasures laid the foundation for modern environmental stewardship. Key aspects of Roosevelt’s legacy include: • Private Resource Ownership: Advocating for responsible private land stewardship while also championing national parks and public lands. • Role of Science: Emphasizing the importance of scientific research and data-driven decision-making in resource management. • Integral Systems Approach: Recognizing outdoor resources as interconnected ecosystems requiring holistic management strategies. Roosevelt’s principles continue to guide us in balancing conservation with sustainable development. Let us celebrate his enduring impact and continue to uphold his commitment to preserving our natural heritage for future generations. #Conservation #EnvironmentalStewardship #TeddyRoosevelt #ResourceManagement #NationalParks #Sustainability #ScienceInConservation

🌍💧 Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Today, we honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities around the world. This day is also a powerful reminder of the vital connection between Indigenous peoples and the environment, particularly in the stewardship of our most precious resource: clean water. Indigenous communities have long been guardians of the land and water, advocating for sustainable practices that honor and protect our natural resources. Clean water is essential for life, and its preservation is critical for both the environment and the health of future generations. Let’s celebrate by supporting Indigenous-led initiatives that focus on water protection, advocating for sustainable practices, and amplifying Indigenous voices in environmental conservation. Together, we can work toward a future where everyone has access to clean water and a healthy environment. https://lnkd.in/dQU6fVV8

Take a deep breath. How do you feel? Today, as we celebrate World Rivers Day, we're reminded of just how essential public lands and rivers are to our health and well-being. These waters inspire us with their beauty, connect us to each other, and help us to go with the "flow." Conservationist Mark Angelo once said, “Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense.” That's why we are partnering with people in communities across the country to protect the lands and waters they value. The result? Cleaner air and water; healthier, more equitable communities; and a more resilient and livable environment for people everywhere. At the America the Beautiful for All Coalition "New Era, New Leaders" conference in September, I led a discussion on "Shifting the movement: Tools to facilitate values-first conservation when power dynamics make it hard." WATCH THE FULL PANEL HERE: https://lnkd.in/eAB9i8Y9 The panel featured Jerry Otero, Grand Canyon Trust, Legislative and Policy Director; Starlyn Tourtillott Miller, Little Shell Chippewa tribal member/ Menominee & Mohican 1st line descendant; Adrian Angulo, Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, Campaigns & Programs Director; and Sheila Babauta, Friends of the Mariana Trench. Some of the topics we discussed were: Community-Centric Conservation: Learn techniques for meaningful community engagement and participation in conservation decision-making. Discover methods to integrate local knowledge and priorities into project design and implementation. Addressing Historical Injustices: Explore frameworks for acknowledging and addressing the colonial legacy and past harms associated with some conservation efforts. Gain strategies for building trust and repairing relationships with marginalized communities. Intersectional Approaches: Understand how to develop conservation initiatives that consider multiple forms of oppression and marginalization. Our panelists will discuss tools for conducting intersectional analyses and creating more inclusive campaigns. Navigating Power Dynamics: Acquire practical advice for advocating for justice-centered approaches when faced with resistance from funders or organizational hierarchies. Learn effective communication strategies and methods for building coalitions to support equitable conservation.
