It’s World Oceans Day tomorrow! An international day declared by the United Nations to mobilize the public to celebrate the value of oceans. What better day to feature underwater Antarctica! With its amazing biodiversity, these waters support incredible marine life such as the Gentoo penguin and kelp forests (shown here). Kelp communities have higher plant & animal diversity than almost any other ocean community, similar to a rainforest. (360-degree photo taken at Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.) The theme of World Oceans Day 2024 & its multi-year action theme is “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate”. By creating movements through collaboration, citizens can highlight calls to action and efforts to restore natural coastal and ocean ecosystems, protect areas of land and water & other important environmental efforts. Our marine ecosystem protection successes and work in both impacted and pristine areas such as Antarctica, provide ways for the public, scientists & partners to support this blue planet that we all share. Follow us as we work to conserve ecologically important ocean regions globally. Join us on an expedition or visit our website to learn more about our conservation efforts. Shout outs to the talented citizen scientists, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, guides, partners, and all those working behind the scenes to help Shark Team One with our mission in Antarctica and around the world. #WorldOceansDay #SharkTeamOne #underwater #Antarctica FastField, Inc., Think Tank Photo, Aurora Expeditions, Esri, Huish Outdoors

Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, yet they’re facing unprecedented threats. The Forever Reef Project aims to turn the tide by building a ‘coral ark’—a living collection of coral species that will help preserve reef biodiversity and enable vital research and restoration efforts. Through coral adoption, you can support essential care and ongoing health checks for each fragment in the collection. Forever Reef’s expeditions reach remote reef areas, capturing coral diversity that’s crucial for a resilient ecosystem. At Everclime, we support Forever Reef’s mission to protect coral for future generations, ensuring that these vital ecosystems continue to thrive. Every contribution strengthens the long-term survival of the Great Barrier Reef’s irreplaceable biodiversity. #everclime #sustainability

🌊 MPA Highlight: Lahemaa National Park, Estonia Known for its stunning glacial boulder formations—the largest in Europe—this marine protected area is a haven for marine life and a glimpse into Ice Age history. Beneath the waves, these boulders create thriving underwater habitats, sheltering species. 💡 Why Lahemaa stands out: 🌿 Diverse marine habitats: From rocky reefs to underwater meadows, Lahemaa’s waters teem with life, including migratory birds and fish species. 🗻 Ice Age boulders: These submerged giants support biodiversity and shape one of the Baltic’s most unique marine landscapes. 🐟 Critical spawning grounds: Vital for herring, sprat, and other species crucial to the region’s ecosystem and economy. But Lahemaa faces mounting challenges—climate change, pollution, and overfishing threaten its delicate balance. Protecting this extraordinary ecosystem is essential for the Baltic Sea’s future. 🌍 Discover Lahemaa’s untold stories and its role in preserving Baltic biodiversity: https://lnkd.in/dtS2ZHYx #MPAHighlight #ProtectBaltic #BalticSea #MarineConservation #Biodiversity #LahemaaNationalPark #Natura2000

🌊 How much do we really know about the ocean? Three-quarters of seafloor remains unmapped, and hundreds of thousands of marine species are yet to be identified, reminding us that the ocean is one of the least understood parts of our planet. Understanding the ocean is critical for protecting our climate, sustaining biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of over 3 billion people. As part of the #OceanDecade, over 600 scientific initiatives across the globe are deepening our understanding of this vital system and safeguard its future. For instance: 🔵 Seabed 2030 aims to map the entire seafloor by 2030 🔵 Ocean Census is on a mission to discover 100,000 new species in the coming decade 🔵 In partnership with UNESCO, Alexis Rosenfeld's Mission 1 OCEAN documents ocean life, as well as the threats to it and the solutions to address them, through annual expeditions Together, we can deliver the science we need for the ocean we want: www.oceandecade.org 🌏
