What a gorgeous painting Brian! In your Visual Art and our music together, your sense of the 'narrative' of life, the stories, social commentary and recognition of beauty in the apparently ordinary, fleeting moments of the everyday is always evident. As in this painting, you successfully imbue your work with empathy, poignancy, and atmosphere. https://lnkd.in/eSasgZiR

The division of Fine Arts at the School of the Arts, University of Pretoria, has the great pleasure to invite you to a walkabout of ’ 𝙋𝙡𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮’, the bi-annual creative outputs exhibition by the members of staff. The exhibition features over forty recent works of art produced by permanent and part-time members of Fine Art staff at the School of the Arts (UP). This includes Dr Avi Sooful, Dr Nicola Grobler, Natalie Fossey, Cazlynne Peffer, Dr Sikho Siyotula, Diane Victor, Fouad Asfour, Prof Johan Thom and many more. The walkabout will be conducted by Mr Teboho Lebakeng, Lecturer in Fine Art (UP) and many of the participating artists will be present. Time: 12:00-13:00 Date: 26 November 2024 Venue: The Bridge Gallery, Javett-UP Enquiries & RSVP: Please RSVP with Ms Zita Oranje at: rsvp.upstudentgallery@gmail.com This exhibition takes as its central theme the notion of the plural. The curator of the exhibition, Wayne Matthews, writes that, "plurality ... is not just a state of being but also a strategy, a form of belonging to the many - being self-referential, auto-poetic and simultaneously social, cultural, and political. Plurality posits even truth and reality as continually renewed questions". Such ongoing questioning is the heart of the arts and humanities, dealing, as it does, with the very meaning of our lives. Meaning is of course always relative and thus requires constant scholarly investigation, testing and greater public discussion.

Public art is a reflection of our cultures with diverse meanings for the communities that interact with it. In all its forms, public art provokes reactions from the public. Conserving it is a complex process that involves different actors, with local communities playing a significant role in creating, assigning values, advocating for what needs to be preserved and, in some cases, conserving what is valued. Also important is the relationship between public art and museums. 'Public Art Inside and Out, which will take place in a hybrid form, aims to include a wide variety of professionals to exchange ideas-from practitioners to researchers and academics, artists, art historians, curators, conservators, architects, city planners, policy makers, collectors, benefactors and institutions procuring public art. Registration for in-person and online participation will close on 30th April. Read the full program and get your registration via the link in the comments.

How easy would it be to track the names "in between" looting or forced sale and acquisition by a museum? Pretty easy, really. Then, check other provenance texts for the presence of these same names. Where gaps or dodgy refs, verify in depth. Why museums haven't done this already? #icom #digitalmethods #duediligence #artlaw https://lnkd.in/e3rn4fYb

What is Slow Art Day? Slow Art Day is an annual event that encourages participants worldwide to look at and discuss art slowly. I’ve been taking part (and encouraging others to do so!) since 2012. Over 1,500 museums and galleries on every continent, including Antarctica’s McMurdo Station, have participated in Slow Art Day. This year it takes place on Saturday 13 April. The idea is simple: look at a few works of art for 5-10 minutes each. You can do this on your own, with a group of friends or as part of an event at a museum. You can also take part online in a guided or recorded session. You can choose which artworks to look at or let yourself be guided by what the museum or venue has chosen. Some venues pick five pieces of art, others may focus on just one or two, while others will give yet more options. To find a venue taking part, go to the Slow Art Day website (link in comments). Afterwards think about: What was it like to look slowly at a work of art? What did you notice? Are you going to take part in #SlowArtDay this year? Share this post to spread the word. #slowart #slowlooking #slowlookingatart #slowmovement #slowartday cc: phyl terry

Input wanted: Research into arts residencies in Scotland Dr Anna McLauchlan is currently researching arts residencies in Scotland for a Scottish Society for Art History (SSAH) journal article. She is looking for edits and additions to this google doc, containing organisations and sites in Scotland that routinely host residencies (or did host them in the past): https://lnkd.in/ed3n3KfR She is interested in the breadth of organisations that routinely host residencies (or did so in the past). Categorisation can be tricky, so details about all residency initiative are welcomed. Your input will be acknowledged in any published work – you can add your contact details to the spreadsheet in the ‘source (your name)’ and ‘source contact’ columns OR email anna.mclauchlan@strath.ac.uk with your details. The outcomes of this broader research can be requested by emailing anna.mclauchlan@strath.ac.uk.
