Sustainable stainless Steel production in MV - Reality or Fiction? We congratulate Outokumpu on their site decision and are proud that we can accompany Europe's leading producer of stainless steel on the path to a climate-neutral future. Outokumpu, the global frontrunner in sustainable stainless steel production, is taking brave steps to further minimize its climate impact. As part of its ongoing commitment to reduce emissions across its value chain, the company is embarking on a transformative €40 million investment to establish a state-of-the-art biocarbon production plant in Germany. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Outokumpu’s mission to replace fossil raw materials with environmentally friendly alternatives. The new biocarbon facility will find its home in Sassnitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, leveraging the strategic location and infrastructure of Mukran Port. With its exceptional logistics network connecting Finland and Central Europe, Sassnitz offers an ideal setting for this innovative project. The site will utilize waste wood as raw material, with an annual production capacity of 15,000 tonnes of biocarbon. Operations are set to commence in the first half of 2026. The biocarbon produced here will play a critical role in Outokumpu’s operations, serving as feedstock for biocoke at its pelletizing plant in Tornio, Finland. This biocoke will be instrumental in ferrochrome production, further reducing the company’s direct emissions and paving the way for greener industrial processes. With the lowest carbon footprint in the stainless steel industry, Outokumpu continues to innovate and explore emerging technologies such as biocoke and carbon capture to enhance its sustainability efforts. "Investing in biocarbon represents not just a technological advancement, but a statement of our commitment to the environment and sustainable industry," says Stefan Erdmann, Chief Technology Officer at Outokumpu. "This facility is a tangible step toward achieving our ambitious climate goals, while also setting a benchmark for the industry." Why MV? The decision to establish the plant in Sassnitz highlights Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s growing importance as a hub for sustainable industrial innovation. With its robust infrastructure and forward-thinking policies, the state is becoming a beacon for projects that combine economic growth with environmental responsibility. “Spain leads the way towards sustainable construction. 🌱 The #construction sector has a great impact worldwide due to the direct consumption of natural resources for the manufacture of materials and the generation of waste. In Spain, #construction waste represents more than 30% of the national total, with a recovery rate of 48%. To address this challenge, an alliance of several companies has launched the pilot project “𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿”, aimed at recovering and recycling #paper sacks used in construction sites. ➡ ENVALORA, NEINOR HOMES, OHLA Group, Grupo Arpada, MACOTRAN SL, RCD Asociación, S. Solís, S.A., Uder, ALIER, Mondi Group, Saint-Gobain Spain and CoCircular. With the financial support of Eurosac and CEPI Eurokraft, this alliance seeks to transform the pilot project into a system implemented at national level, and in the following in other European countries, as well. ♻ Join our webinar on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. (in Spanish) to learn more about this innovative initiative and join the change towards a more sustainable model.” Register here: ➡https://lnkd.in/dznTxffG

In 2019, the Kayunga-Nabuganyi road underwent a significant transformation. Prior to the upgrade, the route consisted of unpaved surfaces that posed connectivity challenges and hindered socio-economic activity. To address these issues, a cost-effective and innovative solution was implemented: Probase technology, specifically designed for stabilizing soil on medium traffic roads. This technology not only delivers affordability but also ensures long-lasting durability – a key aspect of sustainable road development. The impact of the upgrade has been undeniable. Traffic volume has surged, with a 56% increase in ESALs (Equivalent Single Axle Load) measured by recent traffic count studies. This translates to a rise in MESAs (Multiple Equivalent Single Axle) from 0.12 in the base year to 0.22 by 2024, signifying a clear increase in road usage. By transforming the Kayunga-Nabuganyi route from unpaved limitations to a paved thoroughfare, this project serves as a model for sustainable road development – one that promotes connectivity, economic activity, and endures for the long term.
