THRC researchers Elizabeth Ekren, Maria Tomasso, and Melinda Villagran recently published a paper in the journal Sustainability that used machine learning algorithms to explore key components of #resilience based on research in 24K published studies on the topic. The results show how resilience relies on convergence to connect people and resources before, during, and after adversity. Resilience can be thought of as “bouncing forward” to something better after challenges, rather than merely “bouncing back.” To highlight the capabilities of other #AI-powered tools, we also created a short podcast with Google’s NotebookLM to share the paper’s key insights! Learn more about the science behind resilience by listening to the podcast and reading the paper here: https://ow.ly/SEks50UqaIq #TxStateResearch #Health #Sustainability #Convergence

Are you tired of hearing me share the amazing work of Amy Webb yet? Webb's work on future forecasting has pretty much been on my mind non stop this year. Two year ago she wrote: "The future is an endless cycle. It neither begins at a finite point nor ends once something has been accomplished. Likewise, the fluidity of time—not chronological time, but how we experience technological change—must stay at the forefront of our thought processes whenever we’re planning for the future," (Idea: When is the future?, Webb). So HOW are you experiencing the change into a world where synthetic voice, and synthetic personalities are a reality? On the unhinged collaboration podcast, Kathleen Naglee, KATBOT, and I want to really lean way into the emotional processing of both the capacity of hashtag #generativeAI tools for good, and the emotional weight of better understanding the potential harms. With her consent, Kathleen is letting me experiment with her voice (in all senses of the term). When I think of the good this can do (imagine if more of us had access to her mentorship?) it fills me with hope. When I think about the responsibility it is to get it 'right,' I feel...anxious. But what we are interested in as well is engaging our network with the ethical ramifications of experiments like these. They are complex, muddy, and yes emotionally charged. Can we see the greater need for an interdisciplinary education where tech and humanities are interwoven? As I continue to slowly make my way through the 1000+ pages of Webb's 2024 Tech Trends report (available freely, see comments), what really stands out to me is how powerful the scenarios are. This has Kathleen and I thinking about the role of #storytelling and #imagination in this era of rapid change. We hope you join us in co-storytelling for our experimental mini series. If you'd like a slightly more involved role in it, please drop us a DM for details.

SXSW always delivers on the most cutting edge content and it remains the place to go to hear from the greatest minds across tech, media and science. I spent the weekend listening in the background to the health track talks and I have to shout out Amy Webb CEO of Future Today Institute for her excellent talk on emerging tech trends in 2024 #inspired Amy expertly broke down the state of play - we are in a super cycle which is generating breakthrough innovations, akin to when the Internet launched 💻 with the 3 key players #biotechnology #connecteddevices #artificialintelligence driving this. What we must be mindful of today: 💡 Ethics is not leading the AI movement, speed and scale is - which is scary. It will increase bias and we may lose control 💡 Today prompts are designed to be literal... we will move to conceptual prompts which will open up even more creativity, but also risk 💡 Open models = unsecure models? Who will be responsible? We will be discussing all this and more at our Day One Strategy masterclass sneak peek next week for #lifesciences #medtech #healthcare teams. Be sure to attend! And, check out Amy's full presentation on YouTube, it is worth a watch! Are we too quick to celebrate the rise of technology? Mauro Guillen shared some thought-provoking insights that had me reflecting on both the promise and pitfalls of our tech-driven world. Sure, technology has changed our lives in incredible ways, but it's not all smooth sailing. Look at what happened during the pandemic—our hyperconnected world meant that a virus could spread globally, affecting lives on an unprecedented scale. That alone was a sobering reminder that interconnectivity isn't without its risks. It's crucial to ask ourselves: How prepared are we for the challenges that come with such rapid technological change? If you're interested in exploring these perspectives further, comment "427" below, and I'll send you the full episode. Let's dive into the conversation on how technology shapes our world—for better or for worse. [Technology Challenges, AI and Employment, Future Workforce, Pandemic Lessons, Global Interconnectivity]

Can #AI make work more #human? Check out today's Gut+Science podcast, where I talk with host Nikki Lewallen Gregory about what it takes to lead and thrive as a human in the age of automation. A few key takeaways: 👉 AI’s Role in Human Transformation: AI enhances productivity by automating routine tasks, freeing humans for more strategic, creative, and meaningful work. 👉 Mindset Shift in Leadership: Leaders must move away from measuring success solely by productivity and focus on uniquely human skills like empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. 👉 AI as a Tool for Scalability: AI can help scale processes but should complement, not replace, the human touch—especially in areas like insights and client relationships. 🎧 Full episode below. Thanks to Nikki and the PeopleForward Network for having me -- and thanks to Jason Cochran for making the intro.👇

"Whether the social and economic changes AI produces are for good or ill is not inherent in the technology. New technologies may be good or bad or both, and to different degrees and in different ways. It’s a matter of how we decide to use and deploy them. Which means it’s a matter on which social scientists […] should have a great deal to offer.” New technologies was one of the five major challenges set out by Larry Kramer President and Vice Chancellor of The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Professor of Law in his inaugural lecture last week. These challenges, which he sees LSE collectively addressing over the next 10 years, are "in one way or another, critical for the societies in which we live, and key areas for research by LSE scholars and students going forward." Hear more about what he said about new technologies and the other five challenges 🔻 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://lnkd.in/eMqxTscx 🎥 Watch the full recording: https://lnkd.in/e-w_DvUV 📖 Read the transcript: https://lnkd.in/eEhVVyFG
