Amazon and Mondi have developed a new recyclable paper-padded and plastic-free envelope to replace plastic bubble wrap, aiming to reduce unnecessary packaging. The envelope features a shock-absorbent, paper-based lining that is lightweight, flexible, and easy to pack, providing maximum protection for deliveries. This is not the first solution of such a kind worldwide, but reminds us that the goal of reducing the size and unnecessary weight of packaging is still alive. When estimating future packaging demand based on tonnage, we must factor in weight and size reductions, and new packaging usages (i.e., bubble-plastic replacement) over the current demand.
