We've connected talent with industry during a recent project with Techlam, NZ's premium glulam manufacturer. We've long had a relationship but recently facilitated a student from France’s prestigious engineering school Arts et Métiers - École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM), to do a six-month joint internship bridging industry and research. For Techlam is provided access to advanced equipment and expertise, For Scion, this collaboration offered a direct link to industry, enabling us to apply our research in real-world settings. Final call for feedback. Scion and Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research are researching how perceptions of wilding conifers differ, have your say by December 20 and be in to win. The survey will help us understand how perceptions differ across regions, between professions and stakeholders and how they compare to how other biosecurity threats are perceived. Complete the 10-minute, anonymous survey, and be in to win one of five $100 Prezzy vouchers. https://lnkd.in/gSXpMDYi #wildingpine #survey #beintowin #biosecurity #wilding #research Thomas Carlin

Ray Diata has found the perfect present-testing location. The WHITE room (weight, humidity intervals, temperature and experiments) simulates supply chain conditions by applying a constant load to boxes while humidity changes. We can test up to 39 boxes at a time but with global demand for the service, it’s lucky we could squeeze in some of Ray’s presents when we could! We could replicate the conditions these presents might face travelling around the world to make sure they arrive in one piece. More info: https://lnkd.in/gQmwy2yy

#listen Florian Graichen sat down with the Energy Superheroes Podcast to talk about #biomaterials #bioeconomy and distributed manufacturing. #podcast streaming now.
Did you know the world population is expected to near 10 BILLION by 2050? 🤯 A growing population means a lot more demand for things we need on a daily basis - food, clothes, etc. 🍊👚✏️ But that demand comes at a price - lots of waste and rising carbon emissions. What if there was a more sustainable alternative? 🤔 That’s where the circular bioeconomy comes into play. With things like recyclable biomaterials and biomass-based energy, we can meet the growing daily living needs without compromising planetary health. 🌎 We sat down with Florian Graichen on the Energy Superheroes podcast to discuss how he’s helping to accelerate the bioeconomy. Florian is the General Manager in charge of forestry and bio-based products at Scion, a New Zealand Crown Research Agency. 🌱 What products do you use everyday that could come from biomaterials instead? Share in the comments below! And if you care about climate, be sure to like, comment and share this post. Your engagement makes a difference! 🙏💚 #biomaterials #materials #decarbonization #bioplastics #circulareconomy #bioeconomy #greenmaterials #innovation #technology

Ray Diata is thinking outside the box to get those toys done for Christmas, tapping into Scion’s Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) skills. This is just a normal printing filament but Scion has worked on several projects that combine 3D printing and biobased materials like harakeke and wood. It’s work that could enable wider use of renewable resources. Learn more about our additive manufacturing facility, and some of Scion’s other commercially accessible resources at kitmap.govt.nz. #elfontheshelf #3Dprinting #biobased #renewable #additivemanufacturing

Pests and pathogens arriving to New Zealand via the wind pose a huge biosecurity threat and this arrival method is critical gap in our biosecurity net. One of our Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment funded research programmes is aiming to close this gap. Read all about it in this Taranaki Daily News story covering our outreach work in partnership with iwi in Taranaki. https://lnkd.in/gyVeKzwJ Ilze Pretorius | Toni Withers | Steve Archer | Taranaki Mounga Project | AgResearch #forestry #biosecurity #research #partnership #collaboration

Santa’s little helper just upgraded their tech game, blending holiday spirit with cutting-edge tech! Scion, in partnership with Forest Growers Research Ltd (FGR) Precision Silviculture Programme is exploring using virtual reality to supplement training foresters. This year we developed an interactive, 3D virtual reality training tool. Ray Diata took the VR headset for a spin. It was a big night for Ray Diata who got up to no good visiting our Wellington and Christchurch offices. A quick stop at the Beehive to talk shop with ministers before getting his hands dirty in the field in Christchurch. We’ve got more than 30 staff in Christchurch working in forest ecology, entomology and rural fire research. #ElfOnTheShelf #wildfire #entomology #ecology #research
