We've connected talent with industry during a recent project with Techlam, NZ's premium glulam manufacturer. We've long had a relationship but recently facilitated a student from France’s prestigious engineering school Arts et Métiers - École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM), to do a six-month joint internship bridging industry and research. For Techlam is provided access to advanced equipment and expertise, For Scion, this collaboration offered a direct link to industry, enabling us to apply our research in real-world settings. Ray Diata has found the perfect present-testing location. The WHITE room (weight, humidity intervals, temperature and experiments) simulates supply chain conditions by applying a constant load to boxes while humidity changes. We can test up to 39 boxes at a time but with global demand for the service, it’s lucky we could squeeze in some of Ray’s presents when we could! Ray Diata is thinking outside the box to get those toys done for Christmas, tapping into Scion’s Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) skills. This is just a normal printing filament but Scion has worked on several projects that combine 3D printing and biobased materials like harakeke and wood. It’s work that could enable wider use of renewable resources. Pests and pathogens arriving to New Zealand via the wind pose a huge biosecurity threat and this arrival method is critical gap in our biosecurity net. Congratulations Kim McGrouther who was awarded the L.R. Benjamin Medal from the Appita Association. It was a big night for Ray Diata who got up to no good visiting our Wellington and Christchurch offices.
