🚀 Reflections from the Nucleate - Biotech in India Mixer It was a pleasure to attend the Nucleate - Biotech in India Mixer in Bangalore last week and engage with an inspiring group of VCs, entrepreneurs, and founders. The discussions around the evolving Indian life science ecosystem were both insightful and motivating. One key topic that stood out was the role of academic institutions in driving innovation and the gaps in translating groundbreaking discoveries into market-ready solutions. The role of organizations like Nucleate and Institution Innovation Council (IIC), IISc in bridging these gaps is immense. By synergistically working on this fragmented ecosystem, we can amplify India’s impact in the global life sciences space, including the India-US corridor. It was endearing to learn from diverse perspectives and meet like-minded individuals eager to create meaningful change—whether through organizational initiatives or innovative collaborations. Small but Firm Steps ! Incubators are best placed to harness the agglomerative effects of common synergies between the hosted startups. It helps them to generate their first penny. They would be failing in their objective if such a natural networking among the startups is not encouraged or not happening. What I also personally feel that IIT campuses must act as the natural test beds for inducting newer technologies to shape up, provide a breeding ground to germinate such solutions on campus. Incubator is not just a physical space but an ecosystem to nurture innovation. A critical component of Innovation is the system;s resilience to tolerate and encourage genuine failures. IIT campuses are best suited to accomodate this culture of true innovation. I am happy to see that TIDES, IIT Roorkee can provide a culture where startups can find business parters among each other. When Indi Energy works with Siddharth Jena to supply battery, or when Femto joins hands with sanjay pal or Continuing Education Centre, IIT Roorkee; it's not a collaboration between Companies, but between individuals who share a common goal to succeed. Moreso, it is even heartening to see that our parent organization Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is encouraging the fledgling ideas, by not just nurturing them on-campus but also by giving them a test bed to chisel the solution in real conditions. Such collaborations are bound to increase as we grow the number of supported startups ! And as they increase, the maturity of the startups will also increase regarding business readiness. Thanks to partners in Department of Science and Technology, Department Of Biotechnology, Government Of india , Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and various other Ministries for believing in us and providing us adequate resources to pull these efforts. Did you know that the largest genome sequenced to date is that of the African lungfish Protopterus annectens and contains 40 billion letters? While these are distributed over 17 chromosomes, the 100 million letters of the ciliate Oxytricha trifallax are distributed over 16,000 chromosomes. These extreme cases and data for a further > 50 k genomes can be found on the newly designed search platform "mendle.org" by GOENOMICS. You say “support female founders”, I say “yes”! 😉   Excited to be helping one of these 11 companies as a lead coach in the new up and coming #Empowomen program's first cohort.   When building my social business with Solvita Kostjukova, having wise people around to ask for help and advice was crucial to our business journey, even though I really hated the “reality check” of mentors saying that first three years of business are going to be like walking through 💩 till your knees (and they were right).   Not a fan of the whole “female founder” separation from “male founder”, as all of them are just a bit crazy people trying to build a startup and gender shouldn’t matter. But unfortunately we are not there yet, so it makes sense to celebrate programs like these and NGOs like Riga TechGirls that are making a real difference. ❤️   P.s. and, let’s be honest – I also really miss my Startup Wise Guys squad – so when Brianna Quintero & Timi Ilze calls, the answer is “of course”. Deeptech Investor summit at ETH Zürich It was great to meet again the alumni of CAS in Entrepreneurial Leadership in Technology Ventures (ELTV) at ETHZurich yesterday. One of the big questions of the summit is: how could we have a healthier ecosystem of entrepreneurship in this part of the world ? Many things are needed to have healthy startups growing into healthy unicorns, i.e. healthy ecosystem: 📚Availability of programs and trainings that help scientists/ techies to get into the world of business, so that we have technology actually is resolving a real-life problem 🏢 Larger innovative corporates which act almost as industry incubators encouraging spinoffs among their employees: the ecosystem mindset 🎓 Academic instutions and their close collaboration with industry 💶 Availability of financing, investors with diverse backgrounds who actually understand the tech startups they invest in 🌳Last but not least: a strong community. In the ups and downs of startup adventure, the founders need a community to share their challenges and successes.
