Came across a story that serves as a reminder that individual action can lead to incredible change. In 2012, RK Nair was inspired to take action after witnessing the destruction of trees during a road project in Gujarat. Using the Miyawaki method, a Japanese technique for rapid forest growth, Nair planted 1,500 trees. Over the years, he has expanded his efforts, collaborating with 12 state governments to create over 80 urban forests across India. I wanted to recall the approach followed by DYPER with their #biochar #diaper #solution. One baby uses roughly 3,000 disposable diapers each year and can go through around 8,000 before being potty trained. Not only does this cost a lot of money—around $75 a month, or $900 a year—but it creates numerous negative environmental impacts. Disposable diapers do not only harm the environment in obvious ways, such as by filling up landfills, but in other ways as well. For example, disposable diapers introduce feces into groundwater, and they also contribute to the problem of oil drilling, as they are made from plastic, a petroleum-based product. Replicable models are based on training and strategies involving compostable bins where the end-user can collect and sequester CO2 with a certified process and app solutions available for that. The great news for diapers would be that biochar is a great adsorbent! and fibers can be banana waste as in this video or #bamboo #grasses and several other vegetable #perennial biomass with a commercially mature solution. And it does well in compost, inoculants can be inactive and just get activated when composted (thermal effect), or added later on. A typical carbon footprint in disposable #diapers range from 90 to 600g CO2e/diaper. Usage: The #environmental #impact associated with the use of diapers, including water and #energy used for #washing cloth diapers or the disposal of #disposable #diapers in #landfills. #TwoIssuesCollide This post from Harald Friedl about utilizing previously wasted banana tree waste into sanitary pads is a great example of ingenutiy and lives crossing paths. My wife is currently collaborating on a grant to provide sanitary products to students in need at high schools. When we think of poverty, our first thought is often food insecurity. But 100% of the time that people experience food insecurity, they also experience "hygiene need" -- the lack of sufficient, essential hygiene products to keep themselves clean and healthy. According to a study from the Journal of Global Health in 2022, 16.5 million women and girls in the US are experiencing period poverty. Lack of period products hinders education and health, leading to absenteeism, depression, health issues and lack of economic opportunities. "Period poverty" exacerbates economic disparities among marginalized groups, perpetuating cycles of poverty across generations. This is what I love about circular economy thinking. The circularity is not confined to one industry or use case. In many cases, the opportunity for waste to be repurposed as a raw material relies on cross-industry collaboration and synergistic design. We have to learn that waste is not an acceptable by-product of unconstrained consumption. It's International Women's day next week, and as an all-female team, this day holds extra importance for us. 💪 We thought we would celebrate the day by sharing stories about some truly inspiring women in the sustainability space. 💚👩🔬🌎 Our first story is about 3 entrepreneurs- Kristin Kagetsu, Grace Kane, and Tarun Bothra who co-founded Saathi Pads in 2014. Using waste from local banana farming, the trio created 100% biodegradable sanitary pads, which break down within 6 months of disposal. Usually, over 60% of the banana tree is wasted. Buying stems from local farmers not only provides them with an additional income, but also means less waste overall! ♻ With 1 banana stem creating 3000 pads, what's not to love? An inspiring example of how up-cycling tops recycling. Time for a mindset shift away from waste as trash to waste as resource. Saathi Pads illustrates the multiple benefits of circular economy.

The only difference between the world we live in and the world we want to live in is a mindset. The reduction of self, and the uplifting of the problems around us. To be an entrepreneur means so much more that to drive that car, live in that house, or even make that check. Being a real entrepreneur requires a subservient attitude towards solving a problem. Without the ability to understand the problem, you have no basis for a solution. Without the ability to understand the people, you have no basis for your messaging. And without the ability to understand the market, you have no basis for scalability. All of which require a deeply profound desire to be of use in the world. In my opinion, an entrepreneur is somebody who dares to be useful. In a world where internal thinking is encouraged, it takes brave souls to step outside and challenge that which we are, and to create that which we can be. Find your light and share it with the world. Projects like this are just the beginning of what's to come.

Yes, I'm aware about this company, very successful and extremely affordable for most with low income group in country like India.And zero wastage.
