The Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference in Paris included excellent representation from EPRI. The event, hosted by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and Sweden’s Ministry for Climate and Enterprise (Regeringskansliet, Klimat- och näringslivsdepartementet), featured Neil Wilmshurst, Charlyne Smith, PhD, and Emma Wong who contributed their leadership and perspective to dialogue focused on supporting countries developing nuclear power to help bolster decarbonization efforts, infrastructure, and #energyequity. While at the conference, energy ministers, senior officials, and industry leaders signed an agreement calling on governments to help maximize the use of existing #nuclearpowerplants and accelerate deployment of new nuclear facilities. This week the Biden-Harris Administration announced $900 million to build and deploy next-generation nuclear technologies. “Revitalizing America’s nuclear sector is key to adding more carbon free energy to the grid and meeting the needs of our growing economy — from AI and data centers to manufacturing and healthcare,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said. Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy John Podesta added: “Next-generation nuclear energy will play an important role in building the clean power sector of the future. Been musing about early steps Texas could take to help jumpstart Advance Nuclear in Texas. If we want to see Texas become a real player, we need to get in the game. Now. Don't wait. Bringing the Texas supply base up to speed on how they can supply nuclear is no small task. The nuclear specific training and experience requirements to do this work is substantial. The commercial nuclear industry resource base has been sized to the operating reactor fleet and is not ready to support the demands of a massive wave of new builds. So Texas will need to grow their own. BUT, in collaboration with the current nuclear industry so both segments gain talent and experience. Collaboration is the only success path. Some early musings attached. Lots of ways to approach, this is but one. No idea where this goes. Just putting it out there. #OurFutureIsElectric #OFIE

Did You Know?   On June 24, 1974, a significant milestone in the history of energy regulation in the United States occurred with the signing of an act that led to the creation of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This crucial act separated nuclear development and regulation, paving the way for the establishment of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Energy Research and Development Administration, which eventually evolved into the DOE. On May 29, the White House announced new steps to bolster the domestic nuclear industry and to advance America’s clean energy future, including the creation of a Nuclear Power Project Management and Delivery Working Group. The group will develop action plans to support the demonstration and deployment of advanced reactor technologies, make permitting processes more efficient and effective, secure and expand the nuclear fuel supply, strengthen nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, and support an ambitious strategy to ensure the nation’s nuclear leadership. On June 17th, Department of Energy Secretary Granholm doubled down - "Those are big goals, so let me say it loud and clear: Carbon-free nuclear power is an absolutely critical part of our decarbonization equation." The "huge potential" of advanced reactors is why the DOE's FY 2025 budget request includes nearly $700 million to drive a wide range of these kinds of technologies forward. $245 million to support the demonstration of two advanced reactors within the next seven years; another $305 million to develop and demonstrate additional advanced designs by the mid-2030s; and $145 million to build the Versatile Test Reactor - the first fast test reactor in over 20 years. We believe more should be done. #UCANPower has drafted a comprehensive Presidential Executive Order galvanizing and focusing executive agency actions to partner with the domestic nuclear industry on restoration of U.S. leadership globally. According to a recently conducted 2024 National Nuclear Energy Public Opinion Survey, favorable public opinion of nuclear energy continues at a record high. For four years in a row, more than three-fourths of the U.S public said that they favored the use of nuclear energy. The more people know about nuclear energy, the more they strongly favor it to meet our Nation's growing demand for reliable, clean energy.
