Thoughts on Open Day visits #2 It's a really interesting time in HE. Institutions invest hundreds of millions of dollars on domestic recruitment annually. COVID recovery has led many to revert to the techniques and tactics of the golden age of 2019, whereas students are firmly wedged in the post COVID era of 2025. There are a number of great innovations, but overall it's an arena begging for seismic change. Feel free to disagree, love to listen to other perspectives. In the meantime I will keep sharing a few issues/opportunities that I have observed in recent years, for what they are worth. https://lnkd.in/gvKCKDaC

With my co-authors, I helped research an aspect of the intersection of #TitleIX and students in America as part of a #StudyAbroad experience to identify gaps. As someone who worked with international students over five years in student housing through #StudentAffairs and has now taken students abroad for a course I led, the evidence of needing to know one’s resources and rights become a notable concern. My sincere hope is that this article reaches students, staff, faculty, administrators, and the public in a way that begins dialogues of support and further study. The Journal of International Students published the article and it can be found here as a PDF to help begin these dialogues. https://lnkd.in/ewZzcVGe

Seems as if far from stamping out bad practice #ESOS is encouraging it to thrive! It’s no wonder #colleges are acting in this way “desperate times call for desperate measures” if you are in the private #internationaleducation sector! We hear from many in the sector that ESOS is likely to decimate the majority of private providers. As a result #studentrecruitment pipelines into #Australia’s #universities will be disrupted & the sector as a whole will be poorer without a privately funded sector. This behaviour however will “hinder not help” the sector’s cause, the only solution is to quash the #immigration debate & evidence that #intled is actually for the most part immigration neutral through robust, representative international #graduateoutcomes data for #internationalgraduates returning home. From Julie Hare “Private colleges are finding creative ways to get around caps on #internationalstudents, including converting #master’s programs into #research-based #degrees & filing official forms with incorrect names. Other strategies include massive fee discounting & huge commissions to #agents as colleges try to enrol as many students as they can before caps come into force in January if legislation is passed when parliament next sits in November… New manoeuvres that have come to light include providers seeking advice on how to convert #postgraduate degrees into ones that are exempt from the caps, & wrongful or misleading information on official forms. Filing forms with incorrect information allows dodgy providers to poach students who are already in Australia on a visa, without alerting authorities. That is on top of vocational colleges offering vastly discounted fees, 50 per cent cash-back guarantees on $1600 visa application fees and fast-tracked certificates of enrolment (CoEs), despite government promises to crack down on such practices. Desperate colleges are also stacking several courses into packages to ensure students can stay longer in Australia, shoring up their cash flows, and giving agents commissions of up to 50% or up to $5000 cash incentives. #Education consultant Michael Milgate FGIA told AFR Weekend he had been approached by at least six providers seeking his advice on how to switch their coursework master’s into research #mastersdegrees.” Asia Careers Group SDN BHD - Investing in International Futures AUIDF Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) British Council BUILA Education New Zealand | Manapou ki te Ao International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia Independent Tertiary Education NZ (ITENZ) National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (NAGCAS) Regional Universities Network The Group of Eight UCAS UKCISA Universities Australia Universities Canada Universities UK Universities UK International

With instant translation through AI present almost everywhere, we can quickly forget the importance of language skills in today's world. It's a way to connect with people in a deeper way than just considering it a transaction. Building cultural awareness by speaking languages goes a long way toward growing businesses internationally. What we are building at Speechsquare is confidence in communication in 7 languages (for now) through AI speech analytics, which allows instant audio and visual feedback for learners and coaches. The applications in higher education are widespread: - Admissions - Graduate Outcomes - Faculty presentations at international conferences #highereducation #intled #graduateoutcomes #graduatesuccess #admissions
It's a compelling number... Not all universities are blessed with an overwhelming number of applications. So, why not support candidates in getting admitted? NEW on Wonkhe: Claire Toogood, Claire Hudson and Jo Jenkins explain why getting involved with policy-making is not just a matter for academics or policy engagement specialists https://lnkd.in/eV6PUMv5 "Engagement with policy makers can support professional reflection, demonstrate and share impact, and in the longer-term support evidence-informed change and action. These benefits and opportunities should be understood by, and open to, all higher education staff. However, current opportunities for engagement can sometimes appear to be skewed towards the academic sphere."
Professional services staff should have a voice in policy engagement

I'm receiving more requests than usual for admissions/LLM consulting. Unfortunately I don't have the bandwidth/ability to do so currently (maybe in the future if I exit higher education!). But my usual reminder: everything on Beyond Non-JD is free!! I write on the same topics I speak about so the things that are most important to you are often most important to me. Two quick suggestions each for prospects and current LLMs: Prospective LLMs: (1) reach out to the admissions/recruitment teams at the schools you're interested in. I know many of them and they're awesome! (2) reach out to current LLMs and recent graduates. Many are happy to give you pretty open information about their own experiences. Current LLMs: (1) reach out to your own LLM teams. I know many of them and they're awesome! (2) Reach out to alumni from your school. That's really part of the value of attending the program you did. https://lnkd.in/gR9xzJBf

3moThis is a really interesting insight Tim Winkler and, to an extent your thoughts mirror what we can see in the UX expectations outside of Higher Ed. I would add one really valuable point of contact for Josh when considering which university might be right for him. Each of those universities will have a student led law society of some variety. Chat to current students and get their insight. The devil’s in the detail sometimes, and while it’s great to have dads insight to what’s important long term, students can provide some firsthand experience to the questions Josh himself may have on his mind about the transition to uni, and which one is best aligned to what he is hoping to get out of the next few years.
