#LinkedIn Journal Entry: Lessons Learned in Transitioning from Military Service to Civilian Career.
Transitioning out of the military is a formidable journey that every service member must navigate, filled with a myriad of challenges. From securing civilian employment to adapting to a new role, adjusting to a different sense of purpose, managing family dynamics, embracing lifestyle changes, and acclimating to new cultural environments, the process can feel overwhelming. It requires a leap of faith, but resources are available to support this important transition.
Reflecting on my first 30 days as a #SkillBridge intern, I've gained valuable insights that are often overlooked by veterans as they transition from established roles of authority in the military to new beginnings in the civilian world.
1. #PersonalBranding: Embrace the power of personal branding by utilizing platforms like LinkedIn to showcase your unique skills, expertise, and value in a professional manner. In the business world, learning how to market yourself effectively is essential beyond your years of experience and certifications. Be authentic and personable, and seize opportunities to craft and promote your personal brand.
2. #NetworkingEvents: Dedicate time to attend local events and industry gatherings in the areas where you aspire to work. Build meaningful connections and cultivate relationships that can offer valuable advice and insights. These connections can open doors to unadvertised job opportunities and elevate your profile in the eyes of potential employers.
3. #KnowYourStory: Craft a compelling narrative that goes beyond the surface level, allowing you to connect with others on a deeper level. Authenticity is key in demonstrating your genuine commitment and passion. By sharing your story authentically, you can differentiate yourself from other candidates and gain a competitive edge in your chosen industry.
Transitioning from military service to a civilian career is a transformative journey that requires courage, resilience, and strategic planning. By embracing personal branding, networking, and storytelling, you can navigate this transition with more confidence and purpose, setting yourself up for success in your new chapter.

7moI wish I would've had this advice when I came off of active duty and transitioned into a civilian leadership role. Numbers 1 and 2 are no brainers. Number 3? I didn't know how to assimilate and add to the culture because it was quite different than what I was used to. It's ironic because, I was the hired to be the HR leader 😅 Every soldier, sailor, and airmen should automatically have a certified career coach when they transition because it is tougher than people think!
