When Jess Dickenson recently kindly referenced some suggestions I once made about breathe work that can help prior to going on stage to present, I had a few friends contact me privately to ask for similar advice. I therefore thought it might help to create a video to share on here so more people might benefit. I was first taught these exercises by my dear friend, the Royal Shakespeare Company actor, Robert Mountford prior to a presentation I was given on one of the main stages at The Web Summit, in front of around 1,000 delegates. I knew that needed to be more of a performance than a presentation so turned to him for advice. What I hadn’t realised was we would spend very little time on the narrative or presentation itself. Instead, we focused on controlling your breathing, both so you have the lung capacity available to deliver the words without running out of breath, and to calm your nerves before you go on, so you look and feel confident and relaxed. That was back in 2012, and I’ve used these same exercises before any presentation I give ever since. As I explain in the video, there’s lots of reasons why it helps to look and feel more confident when you present and these are simple techniques that anyone can learn to do just that. I really hope they help. I’d love to hear any other tips you have for combatting nerves before something important like public speaking. As an aside, this is the first ever video I’ve posted on here of me talking to camera, because, despite loving public speaking, I also get far too self conscious about these sort of things.
