Setareh Ekhteraei, a fourth-year medical student at the CU School of Medicine, led research into mental health education and the value it can bring to students in low-income schools in middle-income countries. “There's a lack of work in this area — a major lack of research,” Ekhteraei says. “And that affects young people growing up and then as adults, also, still struggling with conditions that go undiagnosed and untreated.” Learn more about her research here: https://bit.ly/3UkHqVJ #MentalHealth #Research #Medicine

Telehealth and in-person therapy produced similar levels of improvement in students during the 2022-2023 academic year. Pretty incredible insights in the recent study published by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) at Penn State. Their new research, titled "A Comparison of Telehealth and In-Person Therapy at College Counseling Centers," is chock full of interesting nuggets. Other interesting findings from the CCMH study: -> In the depths of the pandemic (the 2020-2021 academic year) only 2% of students attended in-person therapy, but by 2022-2023 the number had rebounded to 53% of students. -> Students receiving exclusively telehealth services had somewhat lower symptoms, on average. It is unclear whether this could be due to intentional routing by counseling center staff, or self-selection by students. -> Attendance of video-based services, in-person sessions, and hybrid services was more or less equal across modalities. It is disheartening that there are only two hospitals in Delhi for disability assessment, and one of them employs merely one clinical psychologist. The Narendra Modi government should prioritize the urgent recruitment of full-time doctors, military personnel, and clinical psychologists, rather than destabilizing elected governments in various states. #clinicalpsychology #psychology #clinicalpsychologist #psychologist #positivepsychology
The Department of Clinical Psychology at Dr. RML Hospital has long been known for its packed outpatient department (OPD) running beyond official hours from 8 AM to 6 PM. Despite their dedication and passion, trainees face a harsh reality. A minuscule stipend, often delayed, forces them to repeatedly visit the admin office for what’s rightfully theirs. Now, with only one faculty member left, the future of this department looks bleak—a grim contrast to an already challenging present. The lack of systemic support, recognition, and safeguarding of professionals in institutions is disheartening. Hard-working individuals, drawn to this noble profession, often face exploitation, and advocating for fair compensation can lead to being labeled as selfish. This article highlights just a fragment of the gap between the demand for clinical psychologists and the respect, support, and recognition they receive. It’s time we reconsider how we value and treat these professionals who dedicate themselves to the well-being of others.

Taking the stage at the "Strengthening Mental Health Support in Universities - A Way Forward" conference was truly a privilege. It provided an invaluable opportunity to delve into the critical topic of #mental_health support in #higher_education, allowing us to share our expertise with colleagues in the field. In my talk, I delved into the vital topic of nurturing #psychological_wellbeing specifically for medical students. Drawing from a qualitative study conducted at Nottingham University Medical School, I highlighted the challenges faced by medical students in accessing #support_services and proposed recommendations for improvement. As we move forward, let's unite in our shared commitment to cultivating an environment where every student's mental health is prioritized and supported. The active engagement and valuable insights during the discussion underscore the collective effort needed to enhance mental health support for #students in universities. #medical_students #psychological_wellbeing #mental_health #support_services #higher_education #OpenForumEvents

IMAGINE Imagine a world where Sector professionals collaborated effectively... Sector: Health, Judiciary and Education Imagine having a child who has a diagnosis of SUDEP (Nocturnal). SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. It refers to deaths in people with epilepsy; most, but not all, cases of SUDEP happen during or right after a seizure. Child F - falls asleep around 8pm; from 9pm through to 6:30am Child F has continuous tonic-clonic seizures. Child F eventually falls asleep with the help of sedation around 6:45am and sleeps through until 1:30pm/2pm. Imagine a Judge, a Local Authority and a College ignoring SUDEP - then also ignoring experts in SUDEP, clinical evidence, and the fact the child could die, in favour of the following: FTT orders that Child F go to college from 1pm to 3pm, and after a 6-week transition period, they are to attend college from 10am to 3pm; if not, they don't receive education, accept the decision, or leave it. The Mother only requested a small support package of (EOTAS) [EOTISC] Education Other than at School/College so as to keep safe her child. The Mother (Woman) is told she needs to grow out of her 'own anxiety' and remove the barriers so Child F can attend college - experts in SUDEP and I are utterly dumbfounded. What does one say... just what? #judiciary #send #courts #education #FTT #tribunal #health #SUDEP #publichealth #epilepsy #women #mothers #anxiety #uk #HammersmithandFullham #college #FirstDoNoHarm #death

Check out this work by Duke University School of Medicine PA student Kristina Miller and Washington University in St. Louis Global Health student Ketan Tamirisa on the systemic disparities in bystander CPR administration. A sneak peek: ♀️ Gender Disparity: Women are less likely to receive bystander CPR, often due to societal norms, misconceptions about heart disease, and lack of inclusive training. 🚧 Black and Hispanic communities see higher rates of OHCA, but bystanders in these neighborhoods are less likely to perform CPR. Financial, geographic, and time barriers limit access to CPR training in these communities. 🫀 Inclusive CPR training, partnerships with community organizations, and using diverse training equipment (such as anatomically realistic manikins) can help address these barriers. 👉 Our collective goal: Ensuring all bystanders feel equipped to act without hesitation—regardless of the background of the person in need. Proud to work with Audrey L. Blewer, PhD, MPH and these student leaders on raising awareness and achieving this goal. #HealthEquity #CommunityHealth #CPRTraining #PAStudents #GlobalHealth #HealthcareAdvocacy #DukePAProgram #OHCA #PAsDoThat

"Alarming statistics in the medical education sector! 😔 Over 1,200 students dropping out in 5 years highlights a pressing concern for mental health within our academic community. It's crucial that students opting to discontinue their education aren't penalized financially or mentally. Let's prioritize support systems and open dialogue to ensure the well-being of our future healthcare professionals. 🩺💬 #MedicalEducation #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportSystemsNeeded"

A hybrid approach to related services and mental health can meet so many needs for a district. It can: 1. Attract new providers 2. Help create manageable caseloads for on-the-ground providers 3. Give students options of ways to engage I loved hearing Lynne Inabnitt, M.A. CCC-SLP discuss the role teletherapy will play in the future of school-based services.
Special education and mental health provider shortages in schools have never been more challenging. In our latest op-ed for District Administration, our VP of Clinical Success Lynne Inabnitt, M.A. CCC-SLP explores the vital role teletherapy can play in meeting the needs of both students, schools and the clinicians who serve them. Learn more about how flexible, remote work can recruit and retain talented Gen Z clinicians. “Teletherapy, or the online delivery of therapy services, ensures flexibility for clinicians, shortened evaluation and service backlogs for schools and districts, and access to qualified professionals and services for all students who need them—regardless of their location,” says Inabnitt. https://lnkd.in/gq_HqY8t
