🇬🇧🇯🇵 Strengthening UK-Japan ties through industrial innovation policy Last week, we had the privilege of being hosted at the British Embassy in #Tokyo for a dynamic workshop on industrial innovation policy. In collaboration with the British Embassy Tokyo, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge and the Babbage Policy Forum, this event united policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to: 🤝 Exchange international policy approaches to industrial innovation 💡 Share solutions for developing impactful strategies The dialogue was rich with insights on how both nations can stay competitive in today’s rapidly evolving landscape whilst rebuilding industrial capabilities 🚀 📢 As British Ambassador to Japan, Julia Longbottom, highlighted: “Japan and the UK are natural partners in addressing some of the complex challenges our world faces, and tackling innovation is at the heart of how we do this. 💥Europe's future competitiveness hinges on the successful commercialization of research!💥 The recently released "The future of European competitiveness: A competitiveness strategy" paper offers some inspiring insights. 🌟 (Link Below) One of the key aspects highlighted is the need to close the innovation gap with the US and China, especially in advanced technologies. This requires a radical change in Europe's approach, and regulatory changes play a crucial role in facilitating this process. 📈 The proposed regulatory reforms will not only create a more favorable environment for research and development but also provide much-needed support at various levels. By streamlining regulations and reducing bureaucratic barriers, these changes pave the way for greater innovation and collaboration among businesses, academia, and research institutions. 🌱 For example, the focus on a more outcome-based and efficient R&D framework, along with the increased funding and resources allocated to disruptive innovation, will undoubtedly boost Europe's research capabilities. Yesterday, Mario Draghi advised the European Commission on how Europe needs to transform its economy to restore competitiveness with China and the United States. He proposed an annual investment of around 800 billion euros. But here’s the catch: presently, many European countries are increasingly adopting a more nationalistic approach, focusing on “less Europe,” when in reality, we need more Europe to thrive. As we close our borders to control migration, our traditional industries, especially the automotive sector, face intense pressure from Chinese competitors. The result? Jobs and prospects for many Europeans are at risk, especially for the younger generation. 🚨 Quick decisions are needed now, but European decision-making often takes time. So, what can we do in the meantime? These statements by Mario Draghi in his recent report are alarming and should prompt those of us who have chosen to live in Europe to consider how we can act to change the situation: “The core problem in Europe is that new companies with new technologies are not rising in our economy. In fact, there is no EU company with a market capitalisation over EUR 100 billion that has been set up from scratch in the last fifty years. All six US companies with valuations above EUR 1 trillion have been created in that period of time…. And these figures do not include the many young, talented Europeans who go to study in the United States and found their companies there. It is a huge loss for our economy in terms of jobs and brain drain. The innovation gap is at the root of Europe’s slowing productivity growth relative to the US. So, we must bring innovation back to Europe – and the report proposes to do so through reforming the whole innovation ecosystem. It starts with establishing our universities and research institutions at the frontier of academic excellence, and making it easier for researchers to commercialise their ideas. Only about one-third of the patented inventions registered by European universities are commercially exploited”

"A cutting-edge life sciences and biomedical innovation hub and a pilot zone aimed at cultivating leaders in digital transformation and sustainability are among the key projects mapped out to propel the next decade of development for Suzhou Industrial Park. Spanning at least 39 hectares with a total floor area of 92,000 sq m, the project aims to foster innovations in drug development, medical devices, life science tools, digital healthcare solutions, and AI-driven medical technologies. The China-Singapore Green Digital Hub (CSGDH) is the other earmarked project under the SIP development blueprint. Designed as a research and development hub with integrated office spaces, it aims to serve as a model for future net-zero industrial districts in both Singapore and China. It will also function as a pilot zone for advanced decarbonisation solutions."

Now, Europe urgently needs to adopt a new economic doctrine and reform agenda, or else it will continue to fall behind the United States and others.

Which way is the European economy trending? 🌍 Due to today’s #Europe Day, I would like to reflect on this question and the role Europe plays for the world economy. It's a question that's not that easy to answer these days. What's certain is that strong growth is essential to address economic and social challenges. However, current indicators reveal a different trajectory for Europe. Although the European Union still represents over 16% of global trade, its broader economic growth is lagging, with last year's GDP increasing by just 0.5%—significantly lower than the 3.1% in the US and 5.2% in China. This outlook may seem daunting, but it also offers an opportunity for transformation through genuine entrepreneurial spirit and #innovation. Yesterday I read an article in the German media Handelsblatt summarizing a new study by the Digital Power China (DPC) research consortium, showing that Europe leads China in several technological innovations. For instance, Europe excels in lithography systems used in semiconductor production and quantum sensing applications in healthcare, as well as in advanced mobile phone technologies like 5G and 6G. 🚀 It is my feeling that we often underestimate ourselves: Europe is of course playing a major role in the world economy and is indeed shaping the future. We need to maintain and further expand the technological edge, build fruitful cooperations and ensure economic security. ↗✔ When thinking of the Europe of the future, the vision of Jacques Delors, the former president of the European Commission and called architect of the united Europe we know today, pops into my head: We need “a Europe built on competition that stimulates, cooperation that strengthens, and solidarity that unites”. 🤝 And it could not be summarized in a better way. Today @UCLouvain From 2020, the keywords "technology" and "innovation" appear frequently in the annual "Government Work Report" of China. As the main innovation body, enterprises are increasingly important in promoting innovative national strategy. At the same time, Chinese government pays more and more attention to the technological exchange and cooperation between enterprises. However, with the strengthening of technological exchanges between enterprises, technology's diffusion and spillover effects will be inevitable. The spillover of technology is closely related to the innovation and competition of enterprises and will have an important impact on the financing decisions of enterprises. This study will explore the relationship between the spillover of technology and the dynamic adjustment of corporate capital structure.
