Here’s a glimpse of what the final day of the CASSINI Hackathon was like: tension, focus, and a ton of excitement! After a long challenge culminating in the final pitches, the winners of the Hackathon were selected by a jury composed of esteemed personalities from the world of business, innovation, and technology. Taking first place is OMNI Fl-AI with an innovative idea for using satellite data to ensure safe navigation even in GNSS-denied environments. #Nostradamus secures second place with a groundbreaking project utilizing data from major constellations to prevent space collisions between satellites and space debris. Finally, #RAYSILIENCE claims a close third place with their idea to enhance and optimize aeronautical navigation. But this isn’t the end for CASSINI: today, the winning team from the Italian delegation, OMNI Fl-AI, will face the winners from other delegations in an all-European challenge! Two women played an important role in the debut of the world’s first rocket equipped with a 3D-printed engine from Sriharikota on May 30. Saraniya P, vehicle director of Agnibaan SorTeD, & Umamaheswari K, project director of Mission-01 at AgniKul Cosmos, were instrumental in overseeing the entire project from inception to blastoff, ensuring adherence to strict timelines & budget. Their contributions add to the legacy of other women who have played pivotal roles in recent Indian space endeavours. Among them are Nigar Shaji, project director of the Sun mission Aditya L1; Kalpana K, deputy director of Chandrayaan-3; M Vanitha, project director of Chandrayaan-2; & Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, its mission director. Ten days ago, the Chennai-based startup achieved a significant milestone with its sub-orbital technology demonstrator, setting the stage for a full-scale orbital launch later this year, & a commercial launch scheduled for next year. This Indian Institute of Technology, Madras -incubated company embarked on its journey from India’s first private launchpad, Dhanush, which it established at Sriharikota. The launch vehicle had been stationed at Sriharikota since August last year. The mission aimed to gather crucial flight data & ensure optimal functioning of systems for the startup’s orbital launch vehicle, Agnibaan, which is capable of carrying up to 300 kg payload to orbit around 700 km high (low Earth orbits). The mission was planned to mirror AgniKul’s orbital launch at a reduced scale. Saraniya & Umamaheswari, both first-generation engineers, spearheaded these efforts. For Saraniya, 30, this accomplishment is especially significant as she has a postgraduate degree in ocean technology & not aerospace engineering. She commenced her journey at Agnikul as a systems engineer, responsible for the comprehensive oversight of the launch vehicle's systems. She educated herself by studying about the parts of the vehicle, she told The Economic Times. “Being a startup, we had to do things within the stipulated time & budget, & allocate resources accordingly. Monthly targets were set, & we needed to execute within that budget considering the multiple trials,” she said. Challenges included transporting the vehicle from Chennai to Sriharikota & setting it up there. “Since it’s a remote location, phones were not usable. Once inside, only a few laptops could be used. The team was exhausted after multiple trials. A hold during the countdown was adding to the tension. The #Agniletengine, the world's first single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic rocket engine, powered the vehicle in a mission that the ISRO called a 'major milestone'. In a significant milestone for India's private space industry, Agnikul Cosmos successfully launched its SOrTeD mission, a single-stage launch vehicle demonstration powered by a semi-cryogenic 3D-printed engine. The mission, lasted approximately two minutes, marked a major achievement for the company and the country in the development of indigenous space technology. ISRO congratulated the Chennai-based space start-up, terming the launch "a major milestone". The successful launch of SOrTeD marks a significant step forward for Agnikul Cosmos, which is targeting the multi-billion-dollar small satellite launch market. The mission's data will help fine-tune the development of the Agnibaan launch vehicle, which is expected to be highly customisable and capable of carrying a 300kg payload to a 700km orbit. The Agnikul startup was founded in 2017 by CEO #SrinathRavichandran, a Wall Street trader-turned-aerospace engineer, operations specialist #MoinSPM, and #SatyanarayananChakravarthy, an IIT Madras professor. The startup was incubated at the IIT Madras Research Park.
