The gambling industry and its sports partners have turned what used to be cherished pastimes into non-stop betting machines. Every pitch, snap, serve, and swing has become a tool for gambling. How did we get here? Just follow the money. Leagues, teams, and players have forged once unthinkable partnerships with the gambling industry, prioritizing profit over public health. We need to reclaim sports for our children, families, communities, and protect public health before this damage becomes irreversible. The SAFE Bet Act aims to protect public health with appropriate regulation and reform. As the sports betting sector grows, so does the need for a balanced approach to responsible betting practices. For operators and players alike, responsible gaming should ensure a secure and enjoyable experience while maintaining ethical standards that protect bettors. Yet, the industry's focus seems to lean more toward profit than player protection. In my new article, I explore the effectiveness of current player intervention measures, questioning whether the industry’s initiatives genuinely prioritize player welfare - or simply fulfill regulatory requirements. 👉 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/ejqiTkse #DataArt #DataArtMedia #sportsbetting #responsiblegaming #sportsbusiness #sportsbook

A child aged 14 has never seen a sporting event on commercial television without being assailed by contact gambling advertising and have the betting odds regularly quoted. New figures show the numbers of people betting on sport has doubled in the last five years alone. Tragically, more than one-third of all spending on sports betting is now coming from people with a gambling problem. But this problem is one we can fight. We can reduce gambling harm now and perhaps not reap the full extent of the coming whirlwind. It is time to see the implementation of the recommendations from the Murphy inquiry. https://lnkd.in/gbqPyduY #GamblingReform #EndGamblingAds #ProtectAussies #MentalHealthMatters

𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 "Callum hasn't placed a wager in over a year, yet Sportsbet bombards him with almost daily text messages, trying to lure him back." If the 31 recommendations of Peta Murphy's report were implemented, we could curb these predatory gambling inducements and prevent more stories like Callum's from becoming common. "Our kids are being mainstreamed into gambling and sport, normalised to expect that gambling, #AFL, and #NRL go together. It's utter regulatory and policy failure, and our kids and young men are the main victims," said Alliance Chief Advocate Rev. Tim Costello. 🏈🎰 Get ready for Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, 2024, an event that draws millions of viewers and over $16 billion in bets, according to the American Gambling Association. 📈🔄 With sports betting legalization and expanded gambling access in Virginia, the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) helpline, 1-888-532-3500, notes a concerning trend: a younger demographic seeking help for gambling problems at a faster rate. 🌐🎲 The landscape of gambling is evolving rapidly across the U.S. Thirty-eight states, including Virginia, now offer legal sports betting, with mobile betting legal in 30 states. 🛑💰 To keep gambling enjoyable, here are some tips: 1️⃣ Know the Game: Understand the odds and house edge. 2️⃣ Make a Plan: Set limits for time and money. 3️⃣ Risk: Understand and respect your risk tolerance. 4️⃣ Money: Never gamble borrowed or essential funds. 5️⃣ Team Up: Support each other with a betting plan. 6️⃣ Time: Use a timer to track betting duration. 7️⃣ Balance: Include gambling as part of balanced activities. 8️⃣ Entertainment: View gambling as entertainment, not income. 9️⃣ Take a Break: Step away if gambling becomes frustrating. 🔟 Expect to Lose: Play for fun and never chase losses. Always been a firm believer that gambling should be safe 24/7, 365 and big strides have been made over the 11 years that EPIC has been in existence. A few years ago, I questioned Safer Gambling Week (as it shouldn’t just be 1 week a year) but it was one of our 26 lived experience team members who spelled it out: ‘The industry doesn’t need to do it, and the fact that there’s a week in the year when these really important messages get across from everyone in the sector is a good thing. It makes a difference.’ They were right. The same with PGAM (Problem Gambling Awareness Month) and RGEM (Responsible Gambling Education Month) in 🇺🇸. These times are an opportunity to elevate messaging, innovation in the player protection / consumer protection space and the opportunity to get appropriate messages to those who may need to hear them. So yes, making gambling safer remains a 24/7, 365 priority, but this week EPIC Global Solutions will be supporting Safer Gambling Week because it might just help people which is what we care about.
Safer Gambling Week (18th-24th November) begins today! Organisations across the UK and Europe will be promoting messaging aimed at engendering a safer relationship with gambling for all. Find out how EPIC will be contributing to the awareness drive: bit.ly/EPICxSGWeek24 #SGWeek #SGWeek24 #ESGW24 #gambling #gamblingharm #harmprevention #problemgambling
