As i see it, biggest difference between senior and junior dev/manager/designer/etc. is not only amount of knowledge they memorized, but ability to hold more "key frames" of the problem in their operational memory. Not only problem they working on, but the origins and consequences of it. So more "problem blocks" you hold, the more your seniority level is, the more complicated problems you can solve. So i think it related not only to devops, but for any position. Sometimes it's better to hire a person without proper experience in particular domain, but with a sharp mind.
Kubernetes, Devops, Cloud & Tech. Trying to be useful. Learning everyday, sharing useful pieces here & in the newsletter, do join. 75K+ strong all socials 💪
If you are hiring for a Devops engineer, don't hire people based on their memorization skills. Focus more on problem solving skills and how the person connects the dots for a given problem. Time is value in devops role. The faster a production issue can be solved, the better.

DevOps Engineer: I automate everything and keep the systems running smoothly. Platform Engineer: I build and maintain the infrastructure that powers everything. What the hiring team sees in both cases: Server man The confusion is sadly real. This matrix may help to understand the basic boundaries. 🔁 Consider a repost if this is useful.

DevOps was never intended to be a job. Yet, in 2024, companies are still hiring DevOps engineers. Why? Developers don’t want to run what they build. Is it their fault? I don’t think so. They already have too much on their plate, and infrastructure and automation are not their areas of expertise. How do we fix this? I believe we need to rethink how developers manage the deployment of what they build.
