Synergies between Geological Hydrogen and Geothermal Energy There exists a convergence of known geothermal resources and also known hydrogen observations in specific geologic settings. These tend to be volcanic, magmatic and hydrothermal settings, and in these settings there is no shortage of natural occurring processes that are capable of generating hydrogen. Most of these processes involve iron containing minerals in contact with water at elevated temperatures, typically above 200 degrees C and there is a significant amount of alignment in terms of the critical factors necessary for geothermal (hydrothermal), and geologic hydrogen resources.  Essentially what it comes down to it, it's water-rock interaction over a period of time that is then coupled with a potential for fluid entrapment and preservation, and at high temperature. That is the key for geologic hydrogen resources, and in turn these are also factors that converge in the formation hydrothermal aquifers.  In nature hydrothermal aquifers and geologic hydrogen, are commonly bridged. Geologic hydrogen has the potential for increasing the value of a geothermal project.  Hydrogen will play a critical role going forward to meet goals for Net Zero and there are clearly extensive synergies between geologic hydrogen and geothermal resources. #geologichydrogen #naturalhydrogen #geothermal #geothermalenergy #drilling #oilandgas #sustainablearth https://lnkd.in/ddvMefPG

A new study 💡, “Permeability partitioning through the brittle-to-ductile transition and its implications for supercritical geothermal reservoirs” by Meyer et al, indicates that fractures can be created beyond the brittle-ductile transition, making important implications relevant to superhot rock geothermal ♨️. Myth: Geothermal drilling depletes the Earth’s heat. Fact: No, geothermal drilling does not deplete the Earth’s heat. Geothermal energy is a renewable resource that can be replenished naturally.  The Earth’s core constantly generates heat, which is transferred to the rocks and water near the surface, heat created mainly by the radioactive decay of isotopes in the core and the relict heat left over from the planet's formation. These processes generate a vast amount of heat for another billions of years to come, estimated to be on the order of tens of terawatts. Identifying geothermal fluid characteristics is important for efficient geothermal energy production. Here are why and what to measure.

There's tremendous geothermal potential in the US that could be co-located with existing/retired coal fired power plant infrastructure and military bases. Full disclosure: back in 2010 my partner and I developed a small geothermal demonstration plant at a US Army facility in Arizona. That was based on older tech and using hot water near the surface. This study is based on the newer, deep geothermal technology that is attracting a lot of VC money. The newer tech isn't ready to deploy at scale but it might not be that long before it is viable. https://lnkd.in/gA27F5rb

Geothermal development in the Latin America & Caribbean (LAC) region has been intermittent, with spurs of development happening in specific periods such as in the mid-1980s, the late 1990s, and the first decade of the 2000s. Installed capacity has increased gradually but far from the scale hoped for by governments and the industry.
