The EU's latest move is essential. With ambitious targets set to restore ecosystems by 2050, it's clear they're serious about environmental action. What about other regions. #EU #biodiversity #sustainability https://lnkd.in/dyad3U-R

Join Anita Foerster,Gerry Nagtzaam and myself at 3:30pm AEST today for the second part of Monash Nature Positive Network's webinar series - A Nature Positive Australia - Why does it matter and how do we get there? I will be discussing the state of play in the urgent reform of Australia's environmental laws. I will explore whether the translation of the global nature positive goal under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to the Australian national scale can assist with reforming our environmental laws to: 1. pursue an integrated approach to climate change and biodiversity; and 2. better engage with First Nations perspectives. Here is the registration link: https://lnkd.in/gntC22NC See also Anita Foerster, Melodie A. Prior to the Nature Positive Summit in #Sydney, the #Australian Government is working on the world’s first #naturepositive #regulatory package. Nature positive might do for #nature what #netzero does for the #climate crisis – set a measurable #standard against which improvements can be tested. The Guardian highlights the need for a robust #measurement framework. IUCN is developing an approach to #measure, set #targets & deliver robust contributions for #species & #ecosystems towards the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework. It includes #metrics designed to evaluate contributions enhancing #livingnature with a focus on reducing #extinction #risks & improving the condition of ecosystems. While we welcome #government #action to tighten environmental #laws, Nature-Positive requires a concerted effort to address the drivers of #biodiversity #loss. This necessitates that #companies broaden their scope of action beyond their direct operational #footprint, encompassing #supplychain & end-of-life #impacts. Companies should deliver significant, measurable & verified contributions to #KMGBF & Nature-Positive goals, reducing species extinction risks & risk of #ecosystem collapse, with active participation from & benefit to governments & #civilsociety, including #IndigenousPeoples Martin Sneary Frank Hawkins Florence Curet Peter Cochrane IUCN Business and Nature
Labor has adopted its own ‘nature positive’ approach to the environment. But is it just a ‘snazzy slogan’?

📣🌱 Only through real collaboration can we secure a #NaturePositive economy for all by 2030. It is encouraging to see that ahead of the UN Biodiversity #COP16, the Business for Nature coalition has published a business statement outlining five high-level policy recommendations for governments to accelerate the implementation of the #BiodiversityPlan to drive corporate #Nature action. The statement is endorsed by 130 businesses and financial institutions with combined revenues of $1.1 trillion. I was particularly heartened to see their seventh ask "Ensure sustainable resource use and management to reduce negative environmental impacts through water usage and quality targets." But! Let's see these companies actually put their money where their mouths are and be ardent adopters of all of their asks. 🔗 Find out more: https://bit.ly/COP16pr

Next week, representatives from the Global Environment Facility's recipient and donor countries will convene virtually in the Council Meeting to discuss over $650 million in funding for critical environmental initiatives. This includes managing chemical pollutants, addressing climate adaptation needs, and expanding support for Indigenous- and community-led environmental stewardship. Key highlights: 🔹 Review of $554 million from the GEF Trust Fund, $92 million from the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), and $12 million from the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF). 🔹 Progress review of the new Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF). 🔹 Discussion on planned reforms to enhance efficiency, impact, and cost-effectiveness in funding processes. Achievements 2022-2024: 🌱 Supported over 130 million hectares of protected areas. 🌱 Improved sustainable land management on 25 million hectares. 🌱 Averted 840 million tons of greenhouse gases. Stay tuned for updates on this #GEFcouncil68 as we continue to drive positive and lasting environmental change! 🌿💧🌏 #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/gZakYCxG

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process used to identify and evaluate potential environmental consequences of proposed projects or developments. It aims to ensure that decision-makers, stakeholders, and the public are informed about the environmental effects of a project before it is approved or implemented - including factors such as air quality, water resources, biodiversity, and socio-economic impacts. EIA promotes sustainable development by providing a framework that balances economic development with environmental protection. #sustainability #environment #biodiversity #ESG

Protecting nature is now no longer an option, but a must for each member country of the EU. The Nature Restoration Law was approved by the Council of the EU yesterday. What is the Nature Restoration Law? 🌱 This EU legislation was created to reverse biodiversity loss, enhance climate resilience, and help ensure sustainable land use practices. 🎯 It sets legally binding targets for member states to jointly restore, as an EU target, at least 20% of the region’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. On habitats deemed in poor condition, as listed in the regulation, member states will take measures to restore: · at least 20% by 2030 · at least 60% by 2040 · at least 90% by 2050 Why is the passing of this law important? 🌳 The passing of this law is crucial as it recognises nature's intrinsic value and its critical role in our economies and well-being. 🔗 Read more about the development here: https://lnkd.in/dnHE4KVB. What else has been happening in this space? 💶 Recently, the region explored other models of internalising environmental cost, including exploring a Gross Environmental Product (GEP) metric, a means of valuing nature’s economic value. 🪙 Biodiversity credits are another tool gaining traction to help scale up project developments, particularly in regions with mature carbon markets. 🔗 Learn more about emerging biodiversity markets via the link in comments. ________ 📖 If you’re interested in biodiversity markets, our Global Environmental Markets Report includes an overview of the key global developments in this emerging space. Environmental offsets have been utilised worldwide for over 40 years. Defined by the EPA (2011) as “an offsite action or actions to address significant residual environmental impacts of a development or activity,” these initiatives typically cover issues such as biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions.

Synergy among Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is essential to addressing the intertwined environmental crises that the world is facing. It is encouraging to see academia and other parts of society weigh in on this topic. This freshly published paper offers an interesting perspective: https://lnkd.in/d8XpBXWc

Environmental Net Gain Whilst many of us are still getting our heads around Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), Environmental Net Gain (ENG) is something to be aware of too! Environmental Net Gain is not new. The UK National Infrastructure Commission defines ENG as an ‘approach to development that leaves both biodiversity and the environment in a measurably better state than prior to development’. #ACDEnvironmental #BNG #ENG Read the full blog https://lnkd.in/eH8q5JBE
