I'm a 2 years PQE/2nd year Associate - Is it too soon to move in house? If you'd asked me a few years ago I would have said that you'd ideally want to get a couple more years under your belt. Traditionally the sweet spot for making the move was about 4-6 years. You have learned enough to really add value but you're not so senior that you might put people off. I think there's still truth to that but I have seen a shift in the last few years to people making to move a fair bit earlier in their career. Striking the balance between private practice training and in house experience is important but I believe the shift has moved to valuing the more commercial in house experience more. If you're considering a hire and not sure what level or your first move in house then I'd love to talk with you. Any thoughts on this subject would be great to hear in the comments section

Hoping to be promoted in July? It's common for Lawyers on the cusp of promotion to hold out looking for a new role until after their expected promotion in July. It's better to negotiate a new role from a higher level - right? Potentially, however, firms can hold back promotions for many reasons outside your control. And what happens if your promotion doesn't come through? If you are on the cusp in Q2 and interviewing with a firm that wants you, they know they need to offer you that promotion to attract you now. On the other hand, if your promotion doesn't happen and you start looking for a new job in Q3, what's the likelihood of a new firm considering you at that higher level when your current firm has just knocked you back for it? Very little. It is much harder to move to a higher role in Q3. Lock in your promotion now. Want options? DM or call me - 0419927317 #lawfirmjobs #lawjobs #legaljobs #legalcareers #lawfirmlife

Well - that’s a wrap on my time in litigation and my first 7 months at Square One Law 🎬 Transitioning from full-time university, two part-time jobs, and running a small business to my first full-time job was a huge adjustment, but I couldn't have asked for a better firm and team to start with! 😇 Here are some top tips for those starting their first seats of their TC this year: 1. Stay open-minded and attentive - listening more means learning more! 2. Persevere through the adjustment period; it may be overwhelming at first, but you'll grow to love it! 🖤 3. Learn from your colleagues and fellow trainees; they've been in your shoes or are on a similar path and have valuable knowledge to share. Wrapping up my seat with a canny little trip to Belfast, drinking one too many Guinnesses (or is it Guinnei…🤔)🍀🍺 Now, onto new beginnings in the Commercial Property team! #traineesolicitor #careerdevelopment #doineedanotherhashtag?

As we get firmly into October, here are a couple of things I am seeing in the lateral market: 🦋 Litigation is still hot-AmLaw and boutique. It depends on what you are looking for, but there are jobs for junior and mid-level litigators. There is also a lot of competition for the AmLaw roles. 🦋 Corporate roles, other than financing, are few and far between for the time being. I am hopeful that this changes soon, but we could be looking at Q1 before we see corporate opening up. 🦋 There are opportunities in real estate for more senior associates (think 5+ years). We are working on a few junior roles as well. 🦋 Labor & employment is also pretty hot. We are working on several roles right now! What this means for YOU if you are considering a lateral move? 🐛 It is never to soon the start the process. I am working with several stellar corporate attorneys, and we are bidding our time until there is some movement. 🐛 Most associates want to stay and receive their bonuses. It makes sense. The interview process, especially for AmLaw firms, is lengthy, so a Q1 start is totally doable. 🐛 Working with a recruiter (ME), I will watch the market for you, and identify opportunities as they come in--posted and unposted. What do you have to lose? Let's set up a confidential career conversation. 📧 Laurie.Flood@lhh.com.

No Promotion...Led to a Prestigious Firm Placement... A legal professional specializing in corporate law was overlooked for a partnership at his current firm. He had been serving diligently in a "Senior Associate" role for over a year, handling high-profile cases and contributing significantly to the firm's success. Despite a glowing performance review and widespread recognition for his contributions, he was informed that the partnership slot was filled by someone else, an external hire. Feeling undervalued, he reached out for assistance in finding a position that would acknowledge his expertise and achievements. On paper, his career was exemplary. The feedback from his firm was always positive, highlighting his skill and dedication. It seemed a foregone conclusion that he would make partner, yet the opportunity slipped through his fingers. Then came the turning point... "This week, I accepted an offer from a top-tier legal firm that truly values what I bring to the table. My salary has significantly increased, and, more importantly, I've secured a partner position, which was my goal. To be honest, my confidence had dipped after being passed over. But with tailored support in refining my resume and strategy, I started receiving the recognition I deserved from prestigious firms. I've rediscovered my professional worth." You guessed it. He's moving to a firm where his annual earnings will see a substantial boost. Incredible turnaround, isn't it? He's handing in his resignation this week. #legalcareers #directtalentsolutions

As we head into December, I'm speaking with several lawyers who are reflecting on what they've accomplished this year and what they would like to achieve in the year ahead. The majority of these associates are looking to move in February/March (after bonus season), yet are starting the conversation early to maximize visibility on the market. Why start early? The market is competitive and unpredictable — opportunities don't always align with your ideal timeline. Early planning ensures you're in a strong position when the right role becomes available. Don't wait until the new year to start thinking about your next step. Let’s connect and discuss what 2025 could look like for you. #legalprofession #legaljobs

How many lawyers have we placed? 👀 Since the new financial year (1 July), the Beacon Legal In-House team consisting of Matthew, Jake, and I (and now more recently Charlotte) have helped 26 lawyers find new permanent in-house roles. The roles are various Legal Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel roles across industries predominantly financial services/IBs, sports/entertainment, FMCG/retail, property/energy, and technology. I’ve run the numbers, and the placements reflect a positive image of the in-house recruitment market as we’ve seen an even split of placements across different industries. I’ve very loosely bunched the organisations into different industries and our placements might not be 100% reflective of the entire market, but we can see that we’ve made: - Six in financial services/investment banking. - Four in sports/entertainment. - Six in FMCG/retail. - Seven in property/energy. - Three in technology. If you’re a lawyer with a strong preference for moving from private practice into a SPECIFIC industry, don’t think this puts you at a significant disadvantage. As you can see the number of placements in different industries is fairly even. Of course, there will be fewer roles but it’s way better to consider those in industries that actually interest you as opposed to taking the first thing that comes along.
