Making extended producer responsibility work: TOMRA's side event at INC-5 🌏 We kicked off the conversation around real-world solutions for plastics with a special side event ahead of INC-5 in Busan. 👇 Our focus? How extended producer responsibility (EPR) can help manage waste and reshape economies, power up recycling industries, and pave the way for a smarter plastics future. We brought together a group of influential voices to discuss: 💡 Why EPR is a smart investment for governments and businesses. 🔍 How EPR works in practice, turning theory into action. 🌐 Building a strong case for a global plastics agreement that’s both effective and fair. Learn more about EPR in our white paper. You can find it right here 👉 https://lnkd.in/d-tqg3Fz #EPR #INC5 #CircularEconomy #GlobalPlasticsTreaty

INC-5 Wrap-Up: Global Plastics Treaty Talks to Continue in 2025! After a week of negotiations, INC-5 concluded without an agreement on a Global Plastics Treaty. A revised Chair’s text will now serve as the foundation for further discussions at INC-5.2, expected in 2025. Key focus areas included: 🔹 Plastic products: Chemicals of concern, product design, production, and supply. 🔹 Waste management: Emissions, legacy plastics, and a just transition. 🔹 International collaboration: Financing, capacity building, and technology transfer. 🔹 Implementation: National plans, reporting, and progress evaluation. The road to a treaty remains challenging, but discussions will resume next year with renewed focus. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/deXBHdmb #INC5 #GlobalPlasticTreaty

What a great week! Starting with great news from the EU Parliament on #PPWR (approval of the text, now available in all 24 official EU languages) and ending with a constructive technical exchange with a client on the complementarity of mechanical and chemical recycling. There's no better way to explore chemical recycling opportunities than visiting a real plant that has been processing difficult-to-recycle plastics for nearly a decade. #PlasticEnergy As stated on a previous post earlier that week, the journey does not stop there, as more work is needed to establish a clear framework for a circular packaging industry. Another priority will be the #CircularEconomyAct, to focus on earmarking EPR fees, enhancing the Single Market, improving enforcement, and creating an EU market for secondary raw materials.

Today we release the Executive Summary of our Plastics Pacts: Scaling Impact Report, convened together with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Our summary highlights the global impact and progress of our Plastics Pact Network, reflecting six years in on lessons learnt in demonstrating action. The full report will be available in June. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Plastics Pacts have proven to be an effective model for delivering impact. Thanks to them, tens of billions of problematic or unnecessary plastic items have been eliminated, avoided and redesigned - showcasing significant achievements at national, regional, and global levels in a short timeframe. Plastics Pacts can be a major factor in countries delivering the ambitions of a global treaty. At #INC4, we’re calling for a legally binding, ambitious treaty that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastics. Gasification stalled: Why common pitfalls are holding back the next wave of facilities - #plastics #packaging #innovation #technology #packagingdesign The gasification* of mixed waste, including plastics and non-plastics, has consistently faced various challenges. The end of 2022 was a significant confidence booster for the industry as another large-scale facility came online in North America. However, that confidence has been muted in 2024, as more than 90 per cent of the operating 2024 capacity for gasification in North America has gone offline, and future capacity has also been taken out of the announced pipeline. Below is a graph comparing the announced capacity for 2029 before and after the changes in gasification were taken into account. While there are many reasons \[…\] https://lnkd.in/eAyUWt_p

Despite initial optimism for gasification, one of the primary methods of chemically recycling plastics, the industry has faced major setbacks in 2024. With over 90% of capacity offline in some places, and future projects dwindling, the sector stands at a pivotal crossroads. In this analysis, Joshua Dill, Plastics Recycling Analyst at ICIS, examines the critical challenges of strict regulations, technical issues, and high financial risks that are stalling gasification projects Click here to read: https://lnkd.in/eNvJqfNG To get access to exclusive premium content, become a Packaging Europe member: https://lnkd.in/em_Jz4_Q Follow our hashtag to stay up to date with the latest packaging news: #PackagingEurope

Follow the low carbon road - #plastics #packaging #innovation #technology #packagingdesign Momentum is building in the zero-to-low carbon chemicals and plastics space with many different pathways to production that will give customers more options to reduce their carbon footprint. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as the English phrase goes. And so for the global decarbonisation challenge, all technologies and processes are on the table – carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon capture and utilisation (CCU), biogenic carbon dioxide, green hydrogen, green methanol, e-naphtha and one day, direct air capture (DAC). For now, we exclude recycled and bio-based plastics as these processes are already a bit more established. For […] https://lnkd.in/dqNFSWZz
