Events like the EUSO Stakeholders Forum are essential for promoting cross-sector collaboration and advancing knowledge to ensure sustainable soil management across Europe. Rising temperatures and increasing humidity are surpassing human tolerance limits in some regions, creating serious risks to public health. A study in the scientific journal Nature Portfolio co-authored by members of the Lethal Humidity Global Council confirms that extreme humid heat events are already occurring. The study emphasises the importance of reducing emissions, adopting Real Zero targets and implementing practical measures like early warning systems to protect vulnerable communities. SHI’s 3-yr, $6.5M partnership with approximately 100 scientists to evaluate over 30 soil health measurements at conventional vs. regenerative sites across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico provided the knowledge needed to identify an essential suite of soil health measurements that is widely applicable across wide ranges in soils, climates, production systems, and management practices. We are now taking the next big step to establish place-based interpretation of those measurements. Providing land managers with information on how healthy their soils can become (e.g., how much more water they can store), will motivate adoption of practices to regenerate those soils!

Jason Rohr, PhD's work is helping to improve public health, agriculture, sustainability, and poverty in Senegal. The Ludmilla F., Stephen J., and Robert T. Galla College Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences was one of three winners of the 2024 Frontiers Planet Prize for his research. Published in Nature in 2023, Rohr’s research focuses on reducing schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease affecting more than 250 million people worldwide that causes organ damage and death, and is transmitted to humans from freshwater snails that are infected with parasitic flatworms.
