This is a lovely way of framing one of today's challenges with workplace strategy. Sophie Schuller (official Workplace Geeks don't you know) talking here about matching real estate with how people work.
It reminds me of conversations I've had in the past with corporates where there is one team responsible for the transactions associated with finding a new building (let's call that CRE), a team responsible for the design of the interiors and a team responsible for operating the building (FM). Sometimes reporting into the same Directorate, sometimes not. And very often the order of decisions is find the building, apply global workplace design standard, get people in, and operate it.
Years ago I put together a slide that said that workplace strategy should be a servant to talent strategy. Who do you need to attract? Where are they and how do they work best? Develop workplace strategy and then find the sites that can bring that strategy to life.
Is that happening these days? Has Covid changed that? Or, as I think Sophie is hinting at here, are there still too many organisations trying to change their people to suit their real estate rather than the other way round?
