The French fund, Meridiam, announced on Wednesday that it will invest over €1 billion in a wind energy project in Egypt, which it claims will be the "largest in Africa." The fund stated that a power plant will be built across two sites starting from January 2025 in a desert area along the Suez Gulf, with a total capacity of 1,100 megawatts. The project is part of Egypt's plan to increase the production capacity of renewable energy to 42% of its energy mix by 2030, according to Al Arabiya.net. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly had confirmed in December that the percentage was 11.5% in 2023. The plant is expected to start operating in 2027 and continue operations for 25 years. Egypt and the UAE have announced a massive strategic partnership to construct a giant renewable energy plant in the Zaafarana region. With an investment of $2.5 billion, the Emirati company Kazar will build this plant, utilizing the latest solar and wind energy technologies. Egypt aims to increase its share of renewable energy to 42% by 2030, compared to approximately 20% currently. The plant's capacity will be divided into 2 gigawatts of solar power and 1.1 gigawatts of wind power. Egypt will provide 60,000 square meters of land to the Emirati company on a usufruct basis in return for 2% of the project's total energy output. The projects include: - Al-Masaa (1 GW) in Hail, awarded to a SPIC-EDF consortium at $0.013/kWh. - Al-Henakiyah 2 (400 MW) in Madinah, also awarded to SPIC-EDF at $0.015/kWh. - Rabigh 2 (300 MW) in Makkah, awarded to a consortium of Al Jomaih Energy and TotalEnergies at $0.018/kWh. These projects align with Saudi Arabia’s goal to generate 50% of electricity from renewables by 2030 and are part of a broader effort to allocate 19 GW under NREP, with plans for a further 4.5 GW in upcoming rounds. Ignite Power, the renewable energy firm, has expanded further into the continent, through the strategic acquisition of Oolu, a prominent provider of renewable energy solutions in West Africa. The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, expands its access in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Nigeria and Senegal. It aims to replicate the success it achieved across multiple countries in East and Southern Africa. “We are excited to welcome the Oolu team to the Ignite Power family,” stated Yariv Cohen, Ignite Power Chief Executive Officer. In the presence of H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, and H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of UAE, Hassan Allam Utilities, alongside Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and Infinity Power announced today a landmark agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) as part of Egypt’s accelerated renewable energy initiative. The agreements include two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the construction of solar projects with a combined capacity of 1.2G gigawatts (GW) and 720 MWh (megawatt hours) Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), marking a major milestone in Egypt’s clean energy development. The projects include a 900MW solar plant with BESS in Wahat, and a 300MW solar plant with BESS to be located in Benban. Once operational, these plants are expected to play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions, supporting Egypt’s sustainability ambitions, and increasing the supply of clean energy in Egypt.   It will also be the first development to come on stream in the broader strategic partnership between Hassan Allam Utilities, Masdar, and Infinity Power, which is looking to develop close to 11 GW of renewable power generation capacity in Egypt.   Amr Allam, Co-CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, stated: "We are excited to commence this long-term partnership with Masdar and IPH through this 1.2GW solar investment, which is the first project of an important pipeline of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Egypt. Operation of Yemen's largest solar power plant ◾ Yemen's 120 MW solar power plant officially launched, a move that will provide solutions to the electricity crisis in the interim capital, Aden. ◾ Yemen's largest solar power plant was implemented by Masdar, funded by the United Arab Emirates, as part of Abu Dhabi's support to the Yemeni electricity sector, after years of prolonged power outages and hindering the country's development efforts. ◾ The plant is one of the 3 Emirati-funded plants, the first and largest strategic renewable power generation project in Yemen, and was implemented under the joint cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Electricity and Energy of Yemen and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company to provide the provisional capital of Aden with a solar power plant, transportation lines and transformative plants to transport and distribute electricity generated from the plant. ◾ The pilot operation of Yemen's largest solar power plant began on March 4, 2024, producing between 20 and 30% of the plant's total capacity.  The source: Attaqa #energyticslimited #energyefficiency #renewableenergy #Yemenslargestsolarpowerplant
