#dtemresearch 🌍Exciting Publication Alert! 🌍 I'm thrilled to announce the publication of our latest research article, co-authored with Dr Eben Proos, titled "Small Town Tourism and Marketing: Is a Destination Marketing Organisation the Answer?" in the African Journal of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure. In this study, we explore the potential of a Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO) to boost tourism in small towns, using Philippolis in the Free State as a case study. We examine the unique challenges and opportunities small cities with limited resources face and discuss how a centralised, well-managed DMO can enhance local tourism. By involving experienced and knowledgeable individuals, a DMO could create targeted campaigns, raise visibility, and engage local stakeholders in promoting the area's unique attractions. This research highlights the impact of tourism in small towns and presents a model that can be replicated in similar contexts across South Africa and beyond. Município de Braga presented his case study for #GoodPractices. In his presentation we explored the differences in behavior and tourism on the coast and in the interior of #Portugal. Working under three fundamental objectives 🔹 To transform low-density areas into drivers of regional development and cohesion. 🔹 To reduce dependency on coastal regions while unlocking the tourism potential of the interior and attracting more tourism to the interior regions of Portugal. 🔹 To stimulate tourism in low density areas. #InterregPOST #Post #AtlanticArea #europeanfunds #POST #PolycentricTourisc #Sustainabilit #Braga #Portugal #Tourism

🌍 Tackling Over-Tourism: Insights from Venice and Greece Venice continues to take new measures to tackle over-tourism since the €5 tourist tax that generated €2 million since July 15, 2024 the visitor numbers remain high. Venice is considering limiting tourist groups to 25 people and banning loudspeakers for tour guides to better manage the destination. However, despite these efforts, overcrowding persists. Megan Epler Wood, Managing Director at Cornell University’s Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program spoke to Sofia Christou from Kathimerini about the importance of setting specific goals and ensuring fiscal accountability to make such measures effective. The example of Athens shows how the city only earned 0.42 euros per tourist from 7 million visitors in 2023 highlighting the invisible burden tourism places on local infrastructure, reinforcing the need for better resource management. As Megan suggests, determining the true cost per tourist and adjusting taxes accordingly is essential for sustainable tourism. Read more about the measures destinations are taking and Megan’s insights in the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gDuSpQpV #SustainableTourism #OverTourism #Ecotourism #ResponsibleTravel #TourismManagement #Venice #Athens

Since 2017, when locally, a holistic tourism approach & development was not considered important, let alone authenticity and local experiences, 'everything was doing well' & 'breaking the records' by counting arrivals was enough, my vision was, through Zorbabook, to meet and showcase the real heroes of Greek tourism, who with passion, vision and perseverance connected the traditional- authentic elements of their destination with responsible & holistic tourism experiences. Seven years later, it seems that we somehow 'woke up' and realized which form of tourism has a transformative power and can also provide a competitive advantage to our tourism product-service. Recently, many have joined the authenticity and responsible experiences value chain.. We should bear in mind however, that highlighting responsible tourism best practices and authenticity, must be focused on developing the sector in a strategic manner with specific goals, and not just writing an article, creating a site with lots of traffic to get sponsorships advertisements, to 'sell' short term proposals to Municipalities-Regions, to increase followers on social accounts, to publish a nice video or even to 'exploit' the work-research of others without being interested in the principles of collaboration, cooperation and inclusiveness. As for real collaborations-synergies among different stakeholders and hierarchies based on honest, clear, meaningful and common motives (without personal interests & agendas being a priority) for Greek tourism we still have many leaps to take. Continuing my efforts with persistence, desire and hope for a more authentic, meritocratic and inclusive industry! #GreekTourism #ResponsibleTourism #LocalPeople #Tourism #Greece #Authenticity
