Something a little different and thought provoking for our April episode. We were delighted to be joined by Clover Hogan, Founder of Force of Nature and we explored activism. Expect to be challenged - and hopefully inspired - by the conversation. Out next Thursday 27th April - subscribe to Planet Possible to be sure to catch it. Like other Sustain Our Future initiatives, our Reparative Land Collective began as a desire to disrupt business-as-usual sustainable development. We held a vision that under-resourced land stewards, like Black, Indigenous, Brown, other land stewards of color, and others, could become central actors in delivering nature-based solutions for carbon removal. Through countless conversations and research spearheaded by my brilliant colleague Aissa Dearing, we brought this vision to life. We are so proud to announce the first round of grants through our Reparative Land Collective. These grants will support efforts in agroecology and ecosystem restoration while evoking the framework of land reMatriation. This first wave of grantmaking represents our initial step in reframing carbon dioxide removal practices to center frontline community-driven land healing, restoration, and repair. 👏🏾 ☀️ 🌍 🌱 Get to know our grantee partners and learn more about our Reparative Land Collective in the announcement below!
We have another exciting announcement to share before the year ends! Today, Sustain Our Future Foundation launches the Reparative Land Collective Grant Program to advance transformative land stewardship. 🌎🌱 ☀️ We are proud to announce our inaugural cohort of grantee partners for the Reparative Land Collective, a grant program created to support under-resourced land stewards, such as Black, Indigenous, Brown, other land stewards of color, and others, dedicated to ecosystem restoration and land justice. This first cohort includes 12 visionary organizations from across the U.S., each awarded for their leadership in land healing and agroecological goals. Alongside capital grants, these organizations will receive critical technical assistance such as legal advising, land assessments, permitting, and infrastructure planning to amplify their impact. The Reparative Land Collective embodies SOFF’s commitment to restoring humanity’s relationship with natural ecosystems through land ReMatriation, centering communities most affected by systemic injustices. As BlackTooEarth, one of our grantees, shares: “It’s time to reclaim land near communities most impacted by food deserts and Atlanta’s efforts to displace Black and Native folks. Through the Reparative Land Collective, we are working on a Southeast Atlanta land acquisition effort to challenge the city's decision to build Cop City, creating a community-centered space that promotes food sovereignty and ecological restoration.” We’re proud to stand in solidarity with these incredible partners, and we thank our community advisory board, composed of BIPOC-led organizations, for co-creating a vision for transformative land stewardship. Check out the full list of our inspiring grantee partners and the impactful work they’re leading: 🌾 Help For Landowners Organization (SC) 🌾 National Black Food and Justice Alliance (GA) 🌾 Savanna Institute (WI) 🌾 Center for Heirs' Property Preservation (SC) 🌾 San Diego New Roots (CA) 🌾 Great Plains Action Society (IA) 🌾 BlackTooEarth (GA) 🌾 Sanctuary Farms (MI) 🌾 The Earthseed Land Collective (NC) 🌾 Ukwakhwa Foods (Oneida Reservation) 🌾 Hmong American Farmers Association (MN) 🌾 Elderberry Wisdom Farm (OR) Let’s celebrate this community of land healers and their journey to rebuild ecosystems and nurture resilient, thriving communities! 💚 To learn more, please visit: https://lnkd.in/d9jSDyuk #LandStewardship #EnvironmentalJustice #FoodSovereignty #Agroecology

Exciting news from our partner, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT). A component of their partnership with the Greenbelt Foundation will include 'work with private landowners to thin monoculture stands of trees to encourage the growth of native plant species in the understory and contribute to the diversification of plant and tree species in these areas, improving biodiversity.' Elliott Groen, Sustainable Forestry Coordinator with OWA and KLT (shared position) is leading several components of this important project. Click the link below to learn more about how this investment will support forest restoration and expansion on conserved and private lands in the Kawarthas. ⬇️ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ggx-ngXE
Kawartha Land Trust is excited to announce a $141k investment from the Greenbelt Foundation to support forest and tallgrass prairie restoration and expansion on conserved and private lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine in the Kawarthas. “Making long-lasting impacts on the landscape requires long-term support,” said Hayden Wilson, KLT’s Land Stewardship Manager. “This multi-year funding from the Greenbelt Foundation is the perfect opportunity to leverage our amazing staff and volunteer teams to make an impact on the land that will result in countless benefits for nature and local communities. We expect this project to engage people directly in conservation work that will affect ecosystem health in the region for decades to come.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eaQnUFGY

Over the last year, Appalachian Voices has been working with five coalfield communities in Virginia, with help from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to tackle environmental and economic challenges through community-led projects that are rooted in local leadership. In each community, the projects include reinvigorating a special place. 🌄 Read about these places in New Economy Program Coordinator Kara Dotten's latest blog: https://lnkd.in/e2UEPWKF

It’s inspiring to see years of hard work by Denver Trout Unlimited paying off in ways that will benefit the South Platte River. "Denver Trout Unlimited played a key role as a funding partner in the creation of the Chatfield Reservoir Environmental Pool, a groundbreaking effort to support the health of the South Platte River. This initiative, driven by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other dedicated organizations, marks an important milestone in improving aquatic ecosystems and ensuring more sustainable water management. The first-ever release from the Environmental Pool highlights the power of partnerships, like Denver Trout Unlimited's, in addressing low flow conditions, benefiting aquatic life, and enhancing the river’s overall resilience." Weber county is excited about this pending partnership. The development of the West Weber corridor is inevitable; it's a process that's been in motion for decades. However, the county has taken a proactive stance, laying out a sustainable, comprehensive, and intelligent approach to managing this development in the Western Weber General Plan. The county and UIPA’s aim is to ensure that only the most suitable projects are chosen and supported, with each contributing to the economic and environmental sustainability, not just of the West Weber corridor, but of Northern Utah as a whole. https://lnkd.in/gNzztP_5 #winninginweber #webercountyeconomicdevelopment #uipa
Since January, we’ve been fine-tuning the West Weber Project Area plan, incorporating valuable insights from our stakeholders. Located near major transport routes like Interstate 15 and Union Pacific rail facilities, this 9,000-acre area is poised for strategic development. We’ve especially focused on environmental concerns, engaging with experts and organizations such as the Department of Natural Resources. Next week, we'll present our comprehensive Wetlands Strategy, as part of our overall West Weber Project Area Plan, to our board for adoption, ensuring that every decision we make prioritizes ecological integrity. As Ben Hart, our executive director, emphasized at last Friday's Friends of Great Salt Lake - 2024 Issues Forum, "There will be those who ask, 'how many of the wetlands do you want to protect?' All of them. And if we can't protect them, we're certainly not going to enable their destruction." Learn more about our commitment to sustainability and view the draft of our Wetlands Strategy here: https://lnkd.in/ge-8JFmB
