The holiday season seems to already be in full swing and those seasonal drinks ☕ like pumpkin spice and apple crisp have taken over the shelves. But we highly recommend not letting them take over your #passwords. While it can be easy to tie what feels like countless passwords to current trends, topics and news, what may be easy for you to remember is easy for a criminal to crack and use for nefarious activities like #ATO and #fraud. SpyCloud compiles a list of some trending seasonal topics frequently to see what has been exposed on the criminal underground and we encourage you to update your password to something more complex and unique if you happen to see an exposed plaintext baseword here: https://bit.ly/41vEnfy. ✨ Make the end of 2024 merry and bright by protecting yourself and your organization from the cyber risks associated with compromised passwords.

Day3/31: How can you protect your PII online. Firstly, what is Personally Identifiable Information (PII)? It’s any data that can be used to identify you specifically. Examples are your phone number, home address, passport number, or date of birth. Here’s how you can protect your PII online: § Lock Down Your Data: Think of encryption as a digital lock that keeps your sensitive information safe from prying eyes. It's like locking your valuables in a safe. § Stay Updated: Keep your software and apps up to date. Outdated software is like leaving your front door unlocked—it's an open invitation for hackers. § Strong Passwords, only: Think of your passwords as the keys to your personal space. Make sure they're strong enough to keep out any unwanted trespassers. And if keeping track of them all feels like a hassle, let a password manager handle it for you. § Social media: A Double-Edged Sword: Social media can be a great way to connect with people, but be careful what you share. Oversharing can put you in the sights of online predators. § Keep A Watch on Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank statements, and online accounts. It's like giving your digital finances a regular checkup. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Catching small issues early can save you from bigger headaches later! § Spot the Phish: Be on the lookout for suspicious requests asking for personal information. Phishing scams are online traps, so think before you click. Stay Safe! Dr Iretioluwa Akerele Cybarik #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth #SecureOurWorld #CyberSecurity #CyberAwareness

Did you know that hackers can go to an online marketplace and buy all manner of compromised user accounts? Just browse through what's available, pick out the ones they want, and check out. They can even pay more to get ones that are the freshest (most recently stolen). Now, you might be thinking, "Sure... but those are probably old usernames and passwords which have been changed over time," and you're right, but hackers are more sophisticated and capable nowadays, so what they do with this information is they spread out an attack to use a vast number of compromised devices as proxies. They use these devices to try every combination of those usernames and passwords, not only for the specific website, app, or service they were stolen from, but for everything. This is called a 'credential stuffing' attack, and they are happening with an alarming level of regularity these days. So, how do we protect ourselves from things like credential stuffing attacks? Well, one of the easiest ways is to enable Multi Factor Authentication - in that case, even compromised credentials cannot, compromise your entire account. For businesses, the more you can do to consolidate, modernize, and simplify the way your users work and interact with your data and applications, the more securable you can make your environment, and the easier it becomes to protect your users and help them to protect themselves. Did you know that while you’re browsing for the best holiday deals, hackers are scanning for their own opportunities? Holiday shopping in my household comes with a bit of anxiety—not just from my credit card usage but because this is prime time for cybercrime. With all the extra online traffic, cybercriminals are ready to pounce. Here are three tips to keep yourself (and your team) protected this season: • Watch for Phishing Emails: Hackers love sending fake “order confirmations” or “shipment updates” that look legitimate. One wrong click, and they’re in. • Verify HTTPS: Before entering any personal or financial information, check that the site starts with HTTPS, this means it is secure. It’s a simple step, but it makes a big difference. • Use Two-Factor Authentication: Adding this extra step can make all the difference if someone tries to get into your accounts. Even if they snag your password, they won’t have the second key. Stay vigilant and share these with your team—it’s a small effort now that could save a lot of headaches later.

Stay Festive, Not Fooled: Beware of Evil Twins on Public Wi-Fi! Festive season traveling, shopping and public Wi-Fi? Think twice, That Free Airport Wi-Fi might not be as innocent as it seems. It could be an Evil Twin, a rogue hotspot set up by hackers with tools like a Wi-Fi Pineapple. How to stay safe: 1. Check the network name carefully. Legit ones often require passwords or have verified signs. 2. Ask staff for the correct Wi-Fi name. Hackers mimic names like “CoffeeShop_WiFi” but miss small details. 3. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks like banking or logging into important accounts. What can happen if you connect to an Evil Twin? Hackers can see your data, steal your credentials or even plant malware. Stay secure and let your biggest worry this holiday season be your next stop not your online accounts! #CyberSecurityAwareness #StaySafeOnline #PublicWiFiTips #EvilTwinAttack #FestiveSeasonSafety
