A couple of weeks ago Network Rail held an "Open Data Huddle" which brought together a lot of industry players and data consumers. It was I think the first time that people from quite a lot of the prominent Open Data websites all sat in the same room! I've been thinking about the day for a while and I've been left with view of how insular and overtly commercially focused the industry remains. Much of the discussion during the day was about the existing (heavily commercial) supply chain and existing structures. Data should stimulate innovation, introduce new entrants, be open to all, etc. There have been over the years a number of new entities in the industry, but I'm left wondering how many of those are truly new *people*? The one thing that really struck me was that there was a question during the panel discussion about how the industry can stop data being used incorrectly. You can follow that along it a bit further and read that another way: how do we stop people innovating in a space we as an industry don't like the idea of? Rail has a huge amount of issues around the issue of "not made here". It seems to me that for an industry that wants to encourage innovation there's still a large barrier of resistance to innovation, unless they've done it or come up with the idea themselves. Lots of work yet to be done.
